Well done, Dermot if you remember I had mine come loose at 10k and it caused a lot of damage.

I will print this off and give to my local Indy...

And make sure mine is done proper like..

Dumb question HH and not really much to do with your message but I'd like to know the answer just for information. Why is it called a "compensating" sprocket? Isn't it just the gear on the end of the crankshaft that drives the gearbox via the primary chain? If so what does it "compensate" for?

regards
Steve

Re: New HD Service Bulletin, Compensating Sprocket

To minimise motor pulse/shock-waves etc going through to the drive train and to primarily to absorb shock.
Cushions things from the crank/compensating sprocket on down and saves yer bits from wear.

You can see the two halves in this pic, see the two bits with the three rounded ridges, one in the chain and one below?
Well, they fit together and one turns against the other if there is any reverse movement of the crank and/or primary chain against each other etc. (and believe me there is)

If you had one in yer hand it would be self explanatory.

Re: New HD Service Bulletin, Compensating Sprocket

I must say that I am rather disappointed that there is no ridiculously high torque figure, as I like to feel all smug having a 5 foot long Britool torque wrench that was once part of a Paxman Diesel engine tool kit. It's just the ticket for that sort of 300 foot lbs type job. ;D

It makes your puny piece of pipe extension look like boys stuff Mr Hog. :

Was Loctite not specified before?

I know it has been on other models and I would always put some on anyway.

I think cynically that it will only get checked if 'they' have the Primary cover off for that problem.

P.S Forgot to mention.
Thanks Mr Hog I save all your 'how to' guides and keep them as a supplement to the manual.

I for one appreciate the extra effort you put in to share this stuff with us.

Re: New HD Service Bulletin, Compensating Sprocket

Thanks for the explanation and picture HH. I get it now. I thought, never having seen one, that it was just a gear on the end of the crank driving the primary chain, didn't realise it was made up of two mating halves.

I really admire all your technical knowledge but more than that, the fact that you are prepare to share it with us here.

regards
Steve
