Starter gear for £25 instead of £125

This isn't my discovery but it certainly is worth passing on!

Need any charging system parts? Save big ££££ on dealership and even Harley aftermarket prices by going to www.aceelectric.com and click on Motorcycle Parts…..

This US-wide firm is a car-parts specialist that has branched out in recent years.

But there's even better news…………..

If you need a starter clutch gear (the one that should only spin one way to drive the starter ring gear on your clutch basket….....often the reason that your bike won't start on the button is because this gear is knackered. You can easily tell….. if it spins both ways it's dead) I understand it can cost easily over £100 from the dealer.

If you own a 1991-2002 Big Twin or a 1991-2002 Sportster, you can get it for £25 plus shipping!

Click the "Motorcycle Parts" link on the home page and check out their 4-1420 drive. Mark down the part number so you can ask for a price when you call..

Then, from the home page, go through "Publications" and then "Starter Publications" and then download the Acrobat file ''Domestic and Import Starter Drives'' ... or go direct here:

http://www.aceelectric.com/PDF/S/Drives01.pdf

Scroll down to page 63 where's there's a load of Nippondenso starter gears for US-market cars.

Have a look at part numbers: 4-1034, 4-1035, 4-1036, and 4-1045. These all have the SAME gear as your H-D, but include a pinion that you don't need but which can be simply removed.

Call Ace (the numbers are on www.aceelectric.com/Dist.htm )
and ask for prices for all five part numbers.

Order the one that has the lowest price and/or is in stock now. The car ones cost around $36.

You are asking: why not just order the Harley part from them?

Answer: Because the basics of this tip has been around the H-D world for years. Ace got wise and started selling the gear-only as a Harley bit in their Motorcycle Parts Section - for a higher price!

Whichever one you choose though, even the Harley one if the cars' ones are not in stock (very unlikely), you will be quids in.

And if you really cannot wait for the postman, then print out that page 63, and take it and your knackered Harley starter clutch gear to your nearest auto-electric specialist or Toyota parts expert.

Ask for ''a starter drive for a 1990-95 Toyota Corolla.'' Show the parts guy the website xerox if he appears to have slipped into our gene pool by mistake - so he knows what to look for.

Compare the gear on it with yours off the bike and if it fits, and it should, you're IN.

Now…………who says us guys without all this electric start garbage don't care about you? ;D ;D ;D

(Props to Ghost off HED for the updated info, and to many others for this oldie but goodie.)

Dunno if this applies to this post dave but I've saved this post from the venerable Hippo:

You can get starter clutches for a Toyota Camry.
Part# is 4 - 1036 brand is Accurate, but there are others.
You can replace HD part# 31558-90 and 31558-94

Re: Starter gear for £25 instead of £125

Agreed, there is a certain cross-pollination here - and I too had seen that Hippo stuff quite a long time back.

Ghost just posted this, this week; so thought I would offer a suitably edited update i.e. the Corolla is far more common here than the Camry, and I wasn't sure about his two part numbers....

But yeah, we're on the same songsheet ;)

See mt post of 28/04/05 in the EVO and Twin Cam tech board re starter motor clutches. I got one for 20pds on an exchange, the thing looked brand new. Very fast and efficient service. ;D

Hi Guys,
I'm rather new to this forum, and have been stunned by the fantastic knowledge and info on here. This must be *the* place to come if you enjoy twiddling and tweaking the beasts.
My question here is;
Will these starter clutches fit a 2003 model Road King? I notice the thread is rather aged, but I would expect there to be very little difference.
Could someone please let me know the Toyota part number I need if not he ones on here.
I'd be eternally grateful.
Thanks most kindly.

Re: Starter gear for £25 instead of £125

I think they are all the same, if you see THIS thread I had one fitted in Holland last year and was charged €55.00

BTW my bike is a 2003 RK.

Talking Re: Starter gear for £25 instead of £125

Thanks Baza,
I'll try an sort one tomorrow from a local Toyota dealer.
It might be cheaper and better for me to go Holland and get your chap for the job!

Thanks again,
