Side-stand Spring

Was told that my side-stand was sticking out a bit low when I was riding along. Had a look and it seemed that the spring was knackered, there was also a lot of play in the bracket holding the side stand.

Took the old spring off and went to my local dealers, managed to speak to the head mechanic. He confirmed that the spring was indeed knacked, they also had some in stock for the princely sum of 3.72.

Stick the bike in gear and lean it onto something solid (if your doing the job yourself) or get a m8 to sit on it. The spring should be placed on the side stand and pulled forward onto the attaching point on the frame.

Wire or something else that will not snap easily should be used to pull the spring into place. I used an old piece of nylon coated washing line and a pair of pipe grips.

So check the side stand and spring, we don't want it suddenly coming adrift when your going round a left hander.

Spring part no. - 50005-85A. Says it's for softails, but it works.

Depending on your model here is another sidestand spring tip:

For the far-front-mounted big sidestands (older Big Twins) when fitting a new spring:

Have a mate sit on bike or hoist it

Loosen nut on the top of the sidestand bracket until stop plate is loose.

Then push the sidestand forward until it's **pointing to the front tire**

The old spring falls off. Put on new spring and rotate stand back to the rear and tighten the nut.

On these models, every other method is pointless and tough!

Maybe it works with the new-era shorter kickstands too ;)

cos when I changed mine armed only with a pair of long nosed pliers
Ignorance and determination just as the hook was about to go into its little home, It let go and richoceted around me garage, like a wasp with its arse on fire.
just missing me bonce and scaring my cat shitless. I never found it again.
so had to go by car to buy another,

try the long greased screw drive trick.
but for christ's sake keep your head and face out of the line of fire.
we all learn evetually. after all I am the man who thought you could sharpen the blades on an electric cylinder

Yer right Dave. I had not seen the other post but mine is now sent to the quin so it may help someone else.

A good tip is good to bring up now and again for a newbie...
