Re: Best GPS?

I have a TomTom Rider, my brother a Garmin Zumo. We both swear by them - and at them on occasions. Not easy to recommend one over the other.

You have to bear in mind these are the very things that send big lorries down impassable back roads, to get stuck for a week, so get yourself a good map and a compass as well!

Re: Best GPS?

I too, have the TomTom Rider.

There is a newer version of it available now but my original one is still going strong after over 4 years and many trips both home and abroad, on bike and in car.

Re: Best GPS?

Dont take this the wrong way boys but lets get back to basics we are not in a car where we need to be someplace at at the right time, focus on the road use your gut, check the map before you leave the tent/hotel and enjoy the trip, even if you have to stop and check the road sign and the map trust me you will love it, lose the watch and phone, go for it old skool, even when you have done the route loads of times over the last how many years, it's the best way to ride a bike.

Re: Best GPS?

I read this thread from Baza when I was considering touring in Spain, so you'd probably need to have the satnav mounted and use visual only.

For me, when I need the satnav on the bike, I have my phone with Tomtom navigator 6 plugged into my Autocom and just ride by the spoken directions.

Re: Best GPS?

Go for a refurbed garmin 550 full european mapping on disc and pc
had mine for 3 years went wrong once in the pryennes managed to reboot it when i got home garmin replaced it with a brand new unit so now i have 2 mounts and 2 mapsource which you can install on as many cops as you like

I kinda agree with sam, quick glance at map in morning b4 setting off,but you will miss much if you go by gut ,nose and signage,i do plan my touring and i can tell you there is no way you could have navigated to thoes places on the roads we took .Point we went up the old Gottard pass, the cobbled one,
if you check on a map its really hard to distiguish between the 3 passes,on the road on the unit i got it to take us straight there,no constant stopping to turn round or check route, brilliant !!!

But each to their own ,just get out and ride

Re: Best GPS?

Im with Sam on this one. i use a satnav daily for work but would never use it on the bike. You cant get REALLY lost in the uk, so what if you take a while longer to get somewhere ? You can end up in some intersting places you would never see while using a satnav.

I've ended up in a few unexpected and interesting places using satnav! But I have also got out of an unexpected detour remarkably quickly using one, which would have been more protracted using only a map (in the small hours of the morning!).

The beauty of satnav is that it always knows exactly where it is, but having got used to using one I would never be without a map as well.
