oxford 1st time cruiser pack

thinking of buying one of these, but not sure whether it will fit over a small sissy bar with backpad,or has to be just a plain bar?

any one else out there in "riders land" got or had one, any info, problems and pitfalls would be much appreciated.

looked at t bags =too expensive (tight wad)
tote bags / other bags= not got rack, nor many bungee tie down points,to make it secure and stable.

put the oxford pack in site search engine and nothing came up,hence my request.

Yes they will fit. So will the Oxford Lifetime/Sport luggage. I have used both sets over the years.

The trick to making them fit is to get some WonderWeb and drape it over the seat so it covers the mudguard. After that, you can place the bags onto the bike. Keep the bags reletivelt high and because they are not too deep, they wont foul the wheel or shocks.

If you fix them with bungees over the straps or place a tent/roll mat etc over the straps on the seat and then bungee it all into place. It works well and saves money over other solutions.

The First Time luggage is cheap and cheerful. It does not have a brilliant capacity but they will do. The Lifetime/Sport luggage is much bigger but they cost more. They also do not last a lifetime because you end up putting too much stuff in them and they mishape.

Givi also do several sets of soft touring luggage. They are pretty good quality and are priced around the £80 mark.

Re: oxford 1st time cruiser pack

Hi

I think by cruiser pack you mean the boxy rucksack type thingy with a detatchable roll on top.

I have one of these, the roll is great and can be used seperately. ideal size for some waterproofs and bacon from the supermarket! The design of the main unit leaves a bit to be desired as the lid fixes by velcro and is a bit rubbish to open and close. Can take a load of stuff however, and is fairly stable on my bike with the liberal use of bungee cords. In the longer term i will replace with something a bit better - in hinsight i would rather have paid out more initially and got a better one - was looking at the nelson rigg packs as advertised on ebay which look better - v-twin mania do quite a few.

btw i have a standard height cissy bar (i'm guessing at 9" or so high) and rack - i don't think it would hold too well on the really low ones as i struggle with mine and have to strap a bungee across the top of the pad to keep the elastic straps on the cruiser pack from sliding up.

hope this helps
nick

Re: oxford 1st time cruiser pack

sorry just read your post properly. not sure how you'll get on without a rack.
Have googled the cruiser pack - it is exactly the same as mine.

Re: oxford 1st time cruiser pack

thanks for the feed back folks, i was sure there must be some people out there who had them.

nick, they say that the bag slips over sissy bar and can sit either direct onto a rack or turned around and placed onto seat.

never been one for impulse buying, always like to get lots of info and feedback first and take a while to make my mind up.(drives the missus up the wall)

Re: oxford 1st time cruiser pack

I had a tall NelsonRigg which was similar and gave it away. In my experience you have to be careful how you load it otherwise hard objects will stick out the side. If it's not packed tight it flops all over the place especially because they're quite tall. On one occasion I had just rode into Portugal on some rough road and it flopped down and snapped off the number plate.
What I finally settled for was a hard leather bag which is wider than it is high and has a separate roll bag on top. It's got lots of steel rings sewn into the bag for fixing, could even padlock it. I use this with a pair of soft expandable throwover bags.

Re: oxford 1st time cruiser pack

if i can find our camera i'll post a pic of it on the bike - at the moment the camera has gone awol - i think one of the kids has moved it If you are up this way you can take a look (between bath and bristol). As you can guess it sort of does the job but i'd rather not have bought it!

wondering about one of these now (sold by fatboyz diner)
http://www.american-v.co.uk/news/news/pdfs/AMV19_8.pdf; there is a thread just below this one in Touring started by CovKid on cissy bar luggage which goes on about these bags.

Re: oxford 1st time cruiser pack

I got myself a Kyriakyn Full Dresser bag that looks like it should do the job.
Küryakyn

I will be roadtesting next weekend for a week. It is a bit pricy but seems a good bit of kit.

Wot Dave said - Andy my thrifty moneysavingchum - I mean I don't believe it ! but why would you be advised by anyone to spend a penny more The big dry bag takes loads, tent sleeping bag - spare socks the lot and keeps it all nice and DRY - if you ever have your bike out in the rain - god forbid but it has been known to rain at a rally or two - like the New Rainforest Rally of 2007 er and the Dart and Oz and Kent and Essex and the Lakes and err well all of them!
Anyway you just plonk it on the pillion and strap it to the sissybar with a couple of bungees - job done CHEAP as chips
