Trip to Sweden

I am contemplating a trip to Stockholm next spring, via a North sea ferry, Denmark etc. (and the brilliant bridge over to Sweden). I am aged 56, and my wife is insisting that I do not take the trip alone. Sensible really. I have family in Stockholm, so once there cost is low.

Does anyone fancy joining me for the ride there and back?

Ed

Re: Trip to Sweden

I'm based in South Wales. The wife hates riding pillion, so the fun is all mine! The Oresund bridge crossing looks good, but there is the North Sea ferry to Stavanger, which would mean going by way of Hell. Got to be done, I think, at least one way.

A spring trip, after snows and before midges, would be a good time I think.

Re: Trip to Sweden

Hi Ed,
I think you'll find the only crossing to Sandinavia now is Harwich - Esbjerg DFDS. It is expensive, but the earlier you book, the "cheaper" it is! There are some booking companies which may get the price down.
Sweden is great and probably one of the safest countries to ride in as well. Certainly compared to UK. Low speed limits which most keep to, and big wide roads with little traffic.
I've been a few times, never had problem with midges, but at night temp went to -6 in June!
Agree with Wurze about the rain in Denmark.
Do it, you wont regret it. I've ridden with guys over there in their 70"s!!

Re: Trip to Sweden

Thanks rit and scooter. I have not looked at the ferries yet, so thanks for the info. Does anyone know where you can stay cheaply on the way? I have to have mains elec unfortunately, due to my CPAP, so cheapish boarding houses / B&B, or Formula 1 / Travelodge equivalents are all good, if they are available.

Thanks

Ed

Re: Trip to Sweden

Only done it by car so far, but do your research well if you're travelling on other than the main highways; many minor roads in Sweden have the habit of becoming dirt tracks, without warning, but the maps I had didn't differentiate between tarmac and dirt.
Watch out for moose! They are large, heavy, and immobile.
Also, be aware that there are roads in Sweden where you can drive for mile after mile after mile after mile in a tunnel of trees. You can see nothing except the road in front of you, the trees to the side, and a strip of sky above. This is especially wearing in the flatlands, because there are no hills to generate views. Topographical maps, where you can check the contours and the forests could be very useful.
There are also some fantastic roads in Sweden, with good surfaces and good views. The single carriageways have hard shoulders in many cases, and other drivers will pull over to let you through. I'm not clear if you're supposed to do that, but everyone does.
The Police don't like speeding, and don't even think of riding if there is any chance you may be over the incredibly low alcohol limit, and this includes the next day. My Swedish colleagues will not have more than one beer of an evening if they are driving the next morning. You won't be able to afford much to drink anyway...

Re: Trip to Sweden

I will be going over to Denmark and maybe Sweden next year but will need to time it to take in a rally or two.

I would have no reservations about going alone but that's the way I am. (Billy-no-Mates).

Having said that, If the dates work out, I would be more than happy to meet up.
