New chassis

Hi, I want to tow a trailer behind my Road King from time to time. I don't like loading my bike up with all the gear, so a trailer is what I am going to get. I intended to built the whole lot from scratch, but my insurance and recovery companies have made it clear that they won't cover home built chassis no matter how well built they are. Does anyone know of a company that can supply me with a bare bones chassis that is commercially sold. I don't want a body fitted because I've got my own ideas on what I am going to do with that.
A search on the net has only shown up with finished trailers ready to use.

Thanks for any replies.

Brian.

Re: New chassis

All sorted now. HD Insurance and MAG recovery have had a change of heart provided I get an independant enginneres report on the trailer and it comes up to or exceeds the current trailer regulations for towing behind a motorcycle. They both want a copy for their records.

It's amazing what you can get if you say you're off to somewhere else.

Re: New chassis

These used to do bare chassis but don't list them now.
Their suspension units are good price compared to Indispension.

Re: New chassis

Thanks for that Dave and for the PM Lawnmower.

I'm going to build it myself. I've studied the laws and regs. I've got a friend who works with GRP and fibreglass, and he said if I build it and then hand it over to him...he'll make me a body for it to my spec.
I can't wait...loads of bling, chrome air horns and lots of LED's. I can't do much else to my Road King, so I'll do a trailer now. The Anglia and Lincs Regions will guess what I'll do with it. Get the sunglasses out!!!
I must try and grow up sometime....

Re: New chassis

Also ANY vehicle towing a trailer cannot drive/ride in the outside lane of a motorway, unless the motorway is only a 2 lane motorway, or due to an emergency/restriction traffic on the road is reduced to using the outside lane only. Getting caught driving in the outside lane towing a trailer is a fixed penalty/points offence.

Trailer Info

Trailer Law

The Law

UK legislation was changed in 1984 to allow trailers to be towed by solo motorcycles. The main points are as follows :
  1. Motorcycles must exceed 125 cc
  2. Maximum towed weight, including the trailer and it’s load must not exceed 150 Kg. (330 lb.) or two thirds of the motorcycles unladen weight, whichever is least.
  3. The Motorcycle must be marked with it’s kerbside weight.
  4. Maximum width of the trailer is one metre.
  5. Maximum length of the trailer is 2.5 metres, measured from the motorcycle rear wheel spindle to the rearmost part of the trailer. The trailer must be marked with it’s unladen weight.
  6. The UK speed limit is 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways.
  7. Lighting regulations are the same as other small trailers.
Other countries have different laws, but apart from the national speed limit restrictions, a UK legal trailer is normally allowed as a visitor to other countries.
