Trailer Hitch and Insurance

Just thought i'd put this up as its something i never thought of untill i had an off.

The associated bracketery holding the tow ball onto my bike was made by me.

Insurance Co state that it should be made by a reputable Co

Fortunately my assesor was a reasonable bloke and accepted it.
It does look a reasonable job,not a bodge,so maybe thats whats counts.

Just thought it worth a mention for all our BSHs .

Re: Trailer Hitch and Insurance

I've got the Kuryakyn tow hitch on my Road King. HD Insurance Services wanted a proof of testing under manufacture from Kury before they'd cover me for towing. Kuryakyn failed to answer any e mails from me asking for the info. Guernsey HD, whom I bought the bar from even emailed them and they ignored him too. I later asked on an American forum for the answer. No one could tell me, but one bloke said that they often tow over 500lbs with this bar. HD Insurance accepted this.
It seems that towing over here with a Harley doesn't happen that much.

Brian.

The problem you have is proving that the home made affair is roadworthy, easy when installed by a reputable company ie you have taken all reasonable care to ensure this, Their biggest worry is it becoming detached and injuring a 3rd party.

Re: Trailer Hitch and Insurance

Know its digging up an old thread but relevant. I’ve just contacted my insurance company regarding the inclusion of a purpose built trailer on my existing policy. They would only quote me third party cover whilst towing although the bikes still fully comp. My concern is that contents, damage and theft are not covered ! is this normal practice ?

Ah. That's interesting; when I contacted Carole Nash about towing a trailer, they said it was fine as long as I'd told them - no questions about quality of towbar or anything - so presumably, in the event of a claim, the onus would be on them to prove that the installation was sub-standard if they wanted to dispute it.
But I didn't ask about level of cover re. the trailer itself, plus contents, so I'll be on the 'phone to them tomorrow and I'll let you know.
PS believe I still owe you a pint...
Cheers,
Pete

Re: Trailer Hitch and Insurance

Well, that was exciting; just spent an hour trawling through the book of Terms and Conditions and found the following:
Section 3 - Damage to your vehicle:
What is NOT covered; Loss of or damage to trailers

So it seems that although accessories are covered, a trailer isn't an 'accessory', so it's 3rd party only and contents aren't covered either.
Cheers,
Pete

Hi Pete how you doing m8, good bit of detection. Obviously missed you at Walesby but probably catch up with you sometime in the future.

Seems it’s the norm by most insurance companies Pete to only offer third party cover on motorcycle trailers. Made a few inquiries and found one company that will cover a motorcycle trailer fully comp on a separate policy abet with some restrictions. Downside is that it’s quite expensive for something that will maybe only get used occasionally.

Agreed; the whole thing only cost £250 and contents would be no more than that - hardly worth the hassle of separate insurance since I take care of the theft aspect in the same way as I look after the bike.
And if someone runs into it I'll be claiming off them anyway.
Cheers,
Pete
