Bike licence

A mate of mine is thinking of getting a trike and is asking if he needs a full bike licence, is a helmet required etc etc.

Any advice I can pass on would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Re: Bike licence

To ride a trike on a motorcycle licence you need to have B1 on your licence. Don't quote me on this! I think it was 2000 that B1 was no longer automaticlly given when you passed your bike test. If you passed your test before the cut off date a trike can be ridden on a full motorcycle licence.

Re: Bike licence

I think its all to do with the weight of the trike as well.

This web site trike law seems to specify it pretty clearly.I think the upshot is - Car based - car licence, Bike based - bike licenced.

Helmet laws are also clarified - and its a No - BUT if its car based then you may have to fit seat belts!

This is all very interesting, so if he only has a car licence then the trike will need to be car based?

Thanks for all the advice.
I think my mate is going to be a tad dissapointed as he was thinking of a Harley based trike.

I think you'll find a full car licence will allow him to drive any trike regardless of what powers it. A quick call to the DVLA would surely clarify that one very easily.

Never did pass my bike test in the 60's, so I looked in to all the in's n out's in 2000... Check it out on Trike sites like Trike Design, Trikeshop Uk, NABD etc Good Luck
An Anniversary 2003 Sporty Trike... NO HELMET - NO BIKE LICENCE !!

There are 3 basic Categories ....
A. Bike derived, up to predetermined weight .. NO Helmet .. Car or Bike licence
B. Car Engine Derived, up to predetermined weight...NO Helmet, Car or bike licence
C. Non stock Special ....Car Licence Only, may need Seatbelts n Helmets !!
If ya friend hasn't got a Bike licence no problem, save himself the Test fee there's no need if he's already got a car licence, !!

If 2 wheels ain't enough .. Trike it !!
