Question APE Hangers FXDWG

Hi, Does anyone know what are the tallest set of apes that would fit on a 2000 fxdwg without having to change cables etc. ???? Any help much appreciated.

Re: APE Hangers FXDWG

you might get two inches higher but not much more. I think the stock bars are ten inches high, yes?

if you really want apes, bite the bullet. 14in or 16in give you the real-deal look. It's not that hard, buy the bars, use string to measure, *then* source the cables off ebay for throttle and clutch, car shop for brake......and the other bonus is that when you do the job you can hide all that butt-ugly wiring/cabling INSIDE the bars.

I just bought new-in-bag official factory super-long throttle cables for my 18in apes off ebay for $10 plus postage! Made in 1989, when H-D used to offer cables for high apes.....these days I would be paying £70 for CCI......

Apes are always cool and you are pinky fresh under the arm when you get to the pub Your friends will love you for it.

Re: APE Hangers FXDWG

I Fitted 18" apes with hidden wiring (and slammed it 2" front & back )to the wife's wide glide she can handle it fine, but insisted that she have a bug sceen installed.

When I ride the thing, the QD screen comes off & I normally stap my bedroll to the bars which does a great job in deflecting the wind. Must admit this set up makes the 12" standard configuation look really weedy. If you are going to go high you might as well go the whole hog. A mate of mine did the samething to his WG but also added 6" pull back risers which was a bit too much IMO. Whatever you do if you fit higher bars dont forget to pin them to the risers to stop them folding up in the event of an accident.

I rode from Southampton to the last shiply rally and back fully loaded ( a total of almost 800 miles) in a long weekend on the bike with no problems whatsever so I would recommend the set up it as a fun and athestic mod to a very good and capable basic bike.

The legal limit here in Califonia is that the bars have to be below your shoulders when you are sat on the bike.

Re: APE Hangers FXDWG

Real handy then if you are a tall guy living in C.A. with rules like that ...bars below your shoulder level being O.K.

As a matter of interest how were apes when fitted by bike shops fixed, to prevent them slipping ....just by pins drilled through the bars or

All of these high bars are fine when riding solo, but when you are a fully loaded two up not so easy to control the bike in tight situations and also at very low speeds ( 1st gear )

But they do look

I know just the shit you are talking about Graeme/Kiwi

70s outlaw madness on a popsicle stick.

Saw a guy with apes like that and a chrome coalscuttle helmet in London once. On a brand new bike.

Dork was not the word!
