Front Fork Oil Seals

Has anybody changed the fork oil seals on a FXDX (2001)? My right seal has just started to show signs of oil weepage.
Any ideas on how difficult this job is and are there any special tools? If so where can I get them as my local dealer whants £150 to change both seals!
Thanks Noj

Re: Front Fork Oil Seals

Hi Noj, the FXDX has a bit more involved process in taking the forks apart. There are special HD tools used to take it apart. It's to do with the damper assembly.

Sorry i ain't got any better news for ya.

Re: Front Fork Oil Seals

Whooooa! Changing the fork seals can be a lot easier than that. First take the forks off the bike.
Wheel off, fender off, calipers off, slide the tubes out of the trees.
There is a notch in the chrome seal cover, get a small drift & lightly tap them upward & off.
What you need to do is sink a couple of long screws into the seals opposite each other & pull them out (very carefully!)
(This is obviously not the book approved method, but works in a pinch before anybody gives me any crap.)
Cut a length of PVC pipe & use it as a slide hammer to get the new ones in.
Otherwise the sport forks are a pain & best left to somebody who knows what they are doing.
