Engine check light comes on intermittently

I noticed the "Engine" check light on the speedometer of my '99 FXD coming on intermittently while riding today.

It behaves as it should when performing it's start up diagnostics when the ignition is turned on, i.e. lighting up for 4 secs then going out. However it then comes on intermittently for varying lengths of time, from a second or 2 to where it seems to be constantly on.

Reading the "Checking For Trouble Codes" section of the Service Manual didn't throw much light on the issue as that seems to suggest if a Trouble Code is encountered and stored then the light would go out as usual on ignition start up, then come on for another 8 seconds indicating there's a Trouble Code stored, but this doesn't happen with mine.

I'd appreciate any thoughts and ideas on this!

Mine does it all the time (2000 Fatboy).

I've been advised it's the Speedo sensor, there's no Problem codes stored and the bike starts and runs fine!

I'll get round to changing the sensor next week, I'll let you know if it fixes the problem.

Hi, I also have a 99 Dyna, and it also did all the things yours does, took it to a dealer [Black Bear], and very quick diagnosis found ignition module faulty,changed it for a screaming eagle one. End of problem, Things I can see, I can sort, but electirics, over me ed.

Rob, thanks for the PM .... I've replied .... Hopefully it's the sensor and not anything more serious as there're no problem codes stored

Just thought I'd post a follow up on this issue.

I ran it over to Stratstone in Walthamstow who confirmed no major problems with the electrics. They scoped it and found some obvious corrosion in a connector behind the headlight.

That was replaced and has been fine ever since.

Changed the Speedo Sensor, Speedo now works and the Engine light problems cured as well

Sorry I didn`t spot this thread first time around. I was getting this problem when I first bought my 99 FLHTCUI. The battery was knackered so I replaced it. Guess what? No more engine light.
