Re: the fxdx project

Guys, thanks for the good wishes for the op. I have started another thread in the virtual rally section about my back. Disk degeneration is the culprit. I had my neck fused in Febuary and now its time to get the lumbar done.

In answer to your question Masha, I will check and see if I can find a part number for you. Its a Zodiac part if I remember correctly.

Re: the fxdx project

Last project entry for a while. Surgery is next week. The bike is going down to Matt in Wales on Monday night for its proper dyno setup now that running in is complete. Now it is time to benchmark the performance.

Its been running rich to the extent that the bugger wouldnt start last weekend. Two foot flames out the back didnt help but they did go some way to warming up the garage!

I'll have a play with the accelerator jet setting tomorrow night and at least get it going because I have to ride it down from Sheffield to Warwick over the weekend.

I got the rear wheel done and am fairly ok with where its at as a project at the moment. Yes, there is more to do but there is plenty of time for that.

Here are the last pictures for a while.
The new rear wheel

Re: the fxdx project

Thanks Baza.

Just want to get it over and done with now so I can get on with things. Far too much on hold at the moment!

Re: the fxdx project

Surgery over and done with. Still sore and learning to cope with a fused neck and now a fused lumbar as well. Am very stiff but reletively pain free so count myself lucky and can now concentrate on getting the project rolling again.

In answer to the question(s) about the chain final drive conversion, the part numbers that have been used are:-

Zodiac #191359 - 24T offset sprocket
Zodiac #201560 - 49T rear sprocket
Zodiac #711467 - 110 link O-Ring chain

This will give you more or less stock gearing.

Please note I have since changed the rear sprocket because my primary gearing is lower due to the enclosed belt primary. The above part #'s are what you would need though the chain length may vary.

The bike came back last night. I am still digesting the information from the 43(!) dyno runs that were done on the bike and will post some information once I have collated the results.

Re: the fxdx project

Here are a couple of links to two of the dyno sheets. They are 2Mb each so be warned they will take a bit of time to download.

It very much looks like I need a bigger carb and/or Thunderjets installed if I want to bring the power up. The bike is now set up for the road. It did do a couple of runs on another sheet at 140ft/lbs of torque but they were without the air filter and all the disks removed from the exhaust. It also peaked way to high for road use.

As a baseline, its a good solid start and shows plenty of room for improvement.

I also need a decent V rated tyre! Hitting 130mph at 5700rpm in 4th and 4800 in 5th, albeit under dyno conditions, is pushing it a bit too close to the limit for my liking.

The bike has gained an oil cooler whilst it was away. It hangs off the frame on the left hand side.

You will notice that the belly pan thingy has gone. Thats because it is being replaced by one of these...

I need to do some fettling to get it to fit properly, reroute the clutch cable and cut out some bits to fit around the oil cooler mounts but thats no big deal.

I am now getting it ready for respraying. Much as I like the diamond ice colour, there is only one colour for a "sleeper" as far as I'm concerned. No prizes for guessing, especially if you have seen the old FXSTD.

Armed only with a strong cup of tea, a 1/2" and 9/16" socket and a couple of allen keys, I spent a few hours in the garage this morning...

Tomorrow, its spray time!

good looking dyno graphs, fairly good power and torque over stock!!!

Re: the fxdx project

Wonderful! Is the motor a standard S&S (if such a thing exists) or a special build? Some more details would be interesting...

I'll see what I can do in the spring. To be honest, the Supertrapp is quieter than the RB Racing 2-1 I had on the FXSTD and is much quieter than the Thunderheader previously fitted to the same bike.

Having said that, you can clearly hear that it is a high compression motor by the "crack" that you get on blipping the throttle.

Definitely a good idea Dan and something I will investigate.
