the fxdx project

As some of you will know, Moley and I recently exchanged bikes. I ended up with a rather nice 1999 fxdx.

I am now embarking on a rather intruiging project which, all being well, may end up with me running in the street class of the supertwins next year.

The bike is slowly beginning its metamorphesis....

This side shows a slightly non standard primary and final drive arrangement.

The primary doesnt look too different until you see it close up...

It is now running a primo brute III extreme enclosed belt primary and pro-clutch. The grill is home made, the slots at the front are courtesy of Matts Machine Shop.

The final drive is now a chain...

Still trying out gearing to get it right. This is the second rear sprocket already. The first one revved out at 100mph.

Then it is a fairly straight forward case of removing the 1550 motor, 42mm mikuni and the V&H big shots and replacing it with something slightly more condusive to going quickly...

I'm still waiting for the hagon nitros but it is on the right track.

So far I've got 400+ miles of the break in period done. The speedo is completely out, about 15-20% slow but I'll get that sorted soon. It hits an indicated 90mph at 3900rpm ( 4000rpm limiter at present ) so that should equate to around the 110mph at 4000rpm in top.

Credit goes to Matt down in Wales for his work with the brmm, brmm bits.

Its got the potential to be a blast when its done and again, I will be keeping it fairly understated.

Its still got a long way to go but if people are interested I will keep this updated as progress is made.

BOSS!!

It's so powerful, it turned another bike upside down with its mere presence, by the looks of one of those pix!

See how easy it is to adjust gearing when it's a chain drive ?

Yep, keep us posted....

Re: the fxdx project

For those of you who don't know much about the history of the bike swap - Simon's last bike was a similarly equipped Deuce with the S&S 124" + the Primo drive and a Baker 6 speed. Belt final drive as it's in a fairly soft state of tune.

One of the reason's Simon mentioned to me about swapping was because he thought a different bike would be good for him and might "slow him down a little".

Next thing you know he's building a drag bike

Just goes to show - you can't keep a good man down

Thanks for the encouraging comments.

Moley, I just hope I can still ride the thing after the next operation!

Re: the fxdx project

Speedo calibration unit went on last weekend.

These new toys arrived today. Should get them on at the weekend.
They are a bit shorter than the stock 1999 items. Thanks to my back being the way it is, I struggle to raise my leg over the seat at the normal height.

Re: the fxdx project

Got the new Hagon Nitros fitted on Friday night.

Put 2, then 3 full turns on the adjustment at the top. Road tested it and then wound on a 4th turn. That seemed to set get the preload sorted.

They werent rebounding quick enough but all of two seconds to adjust them on the bottom, two clicks and they're pretty much spot on now.

Changed the fork oil to Spectro Heavy and it feels like a diifferent bike now.

Setting up the speedo calibration unit was straight forward. Hilz and I went out on the bike. I rode for an indicated 10 miles. She had an an indicated 11.5 miles. I set the unit for +15% and its spot on.

I started to have some fun with the speedo. It wouldnt work properly until the bike has been ridden for a while, stopped and restarted. Took the speedo sensor out and found the usual ball of fillings stuck to it. Cleaned them off, refitted it and all seems fine now.

So...where are we now?
The rev limiter has now clicked up to 5000rpm from 4000rpm. The bike is feeling pretty good and is pulling an indicated 120mph at 4400rpm in fifth. No idea what the top speed is yet and its pretty irrelevant.

I need to finish the running in miles and get the jets set properly, its running rich.

The bike pulls strongly from low down as you would expect and I'm now trying to work out how many gear changes I can make in a fast 1/4 mile. I'm guessing its three so I have to start looking at what the bike will comfortably do in fourth.

Its a shame it wont be ready for the Extreme Bike Weekend at Santa Pod next week. At least I'll have the winter to get all the fine tuning done.

Still got to sort out the rear brake, rear wheel and rear indicators to tidy it up a bit and the air dam thing will be swapped out for a proper full length one. On the whole its coming together quite well.
