Problem with 2007 Street Bob

A 2007 model Street Bob with 5000 miles.

At 3000 miles a problem arose when the starter motor was trying to engage while the bike was moving. Also the starter motor can activate itself as soon as the ignition is turned on. Recovered back to the HD dealer and 4 days later the bike is fixed. Apparently the problem is in the starter switch cluster. Not sure if the switch was replaced or if it was repaired by the dealer. The wires in the cluster would seem to be the problem

Now 2000 miles later the problem returns.

Anyone else had such a problem? Is it common or a one off?

Don't like the idea of a repair on a 2007 bike a total replacement of ALL affected parts should be in order!!

When you take it back explain to them that they tried to repair it and it diddn't work so now will you please fix it properly,

if a week or so after the warrenty runs out it happens again you'll be the one picking up the tab!!

Re: Problem with 2007 Street Bob

This happened repeatedly to a friend of mine with an 06 Heritage. The first time he said the bike was idling on it's stand & he heard the starter trying to engage so he shut the bike down straight away. It did it again a few times when idling then did it when he was riding at 95 mph! He took it back to the shop numerous times & they could find nothing wrong. He's just traded it in for a Street Glide ..

Re: Problem with 2007 Street Bob

FYI its a 2 year warranty on all new bikes.

Had the same problem on my 2007 Ultra happened after the deluge of rain in July when i was on the way to the Yorky rally. It was intermitant and came and went for about 3 weeks. Local dealer diagnosed water in the switch gear and replaced the starter button in switch gear. It hasnt happened since but if you look in the switch gear you can see all the way through the switches to the contacts underneath so its not really a surprise that the water got in and shorted the starter circuit. Just piss poor quality as usual. and not much you can do about it either.

Re: Problem with 2007 Street Bob

Give it a spray with contact cleaner, as Mark said it is normally water ingression. It has happened on Honda's and Yamaha's that we have owned. On Yamaha's flicking the kill switch on and off stops it. Never had a problem with the Harley's although I rarely use the kill switch.

Re: Problem with 2007 Street Bob

This bike is due to go in for its 6 (or is it 7th?) starter switch!

Looks like the starter will be replaced as well this time.

Any advice? Have contacted Trading Standards to suss the way ahead.
