Is it normal to pop bang and gurgle?

I have a Dyna Superglide and fitted Remus removable baffles. It is very loud but I met a seasoned HD rider on Sunday who told me that when the dealership fitted them the bike should have been remapped???. He said it shouldn't pop bang and gurgle as this will damage the engine. Is this true? Am I making a fool of myself when I decerate and it makes these noises or can I keep the smug look like that guy out of the young ones?
Hope someone can help.
Paul

Not good, you will most likley find it is running much hotter. Do you have a fueller fitted?
My dealer fitted BigShot Staggered's to my FXSTC along with a Fuelpak. They did not map it. Run very hot and popped a lot. They dont seem to care.
Dumped the FuelPak and had a PowerCommander 3 fitted by a Dyno man who tuned it. Now runs cool. Some popping but this was sorted by plugging in my laptop and adjusting the zero throttle position values.

Thanks for the ireplies. Andy C, i understand more about Einsteins theory of reflexology than what you just said. Does anyone know of anyone in the Coventry area who can sort this or should I go back to the Birmingham dealer?

I also have a Super Glide bought from a dealership with Screaming Eagles silencer fitted, these pop and gurgle the same, would the same conditions apply? I did ask them to check it before I took delivery but they said it was OK. Should I get it checked out elsewhere? They've done 2 services and MOTs without comment so far.

Re: Is it normal to pop bang and gurgle?

Paul, do you have the baffles fitted or have they been removed? If they have been removed, try replacing them and see what happens. If they havent been removed then it looks like a remap is required.

Allegedly the Remus mufflers could be swapped with the stock ones and no remap was required. I have been told this by a couple of dealerships. When pushed a bit harder, they admitted that "maybe the odd one or two" needed a remap.

I suspect the fuel needs to be added to the map because of conditions caused by the throttle being shut off and the zero position being indicated on the map. Fuel could be added with one of the fuelers on the market.

Ultimately you are changing the breathing of the motor. The nature of EFI is such that it is more sensitive than a carb. You could possibly get away without a jet change on a carbed model but it isnt as likely with a fuel injected bike.

Re: Is it normal to pop bang and gurgle?

Hello Simon, it was good to meet up last week.

You may have something there. I did run with the baffles in for a while and I thought it did appear to be running a bit smoother but I thought that I was just imagining this due to the sudden lack of noise. I live near Oilslick so I might ask him to jump on my bike and give me his opinion over the next couple of days. I'm hoping to go to Talgarth on it.

If the dealer's changed the filter for a SE one, you definitely need a remap. Do you still have the plastic air filter housing with the forward-facing scoop fitted? It's behind the chrome cover between the cylinders, on the right-hand side.

Hello Mike, Its the original air filter. Its just the exhausts that were changed.

Re: Is it normal to pop bang and gurgle?

Its the same for all the aftermarket slip ons - dealers say you don't need a remap. However your basically making a bike that runs lean anyway (california regs) run leaner. I fitted V&H slip ons and it popped and farted like a good 'un untill I put a PCIII USB on.

There are masses of other posts on this; one point to look out for though is if you do fit a fuelpack - the ones you buy from the US, alhough cheaper to initially purchase, are fitted with a different map than the ones you get in the UK (where the part number is apparently postfixed with a "-a") so will need a dyno tune to get the bike to run right. If you do a search on fuelpack your see all the chat.

When I chatted my poppin/fartin situation through with Oxford HD, they advised me to get a fueler etc, not panic about it but get it done.

If you have a stage 1 airfilter fitted, as per previous post, I would get a fuelpack or PC before riding it any distance.
