Re: Panic !

Don't think it's broken - but how do I check if it's damaged? Is it just a visual thing? Do I need a check meter thingy (Can't find mine at the moment).

Re: Panic !

if it starts with the extra grunt provided by an extra battery then its a battery problem, if it not then its a question of working round the system.

the crank sensor is fairly robust, it's held in by an allen bolt at the front of the engine near the oil filter.

good luck and remember that at least these aren't Lucas electrics you're dealing with, which is a hell of a bonus !!

Why not Phil?
It doesn't know the plug's out, so why won't it spark (assuming a good earth to the plug body)? I haven't tried it on the Harley, but usually I loop a single core copper wire a couple of times around the thread, and tie it down to earth somewhere.....

Spark plug tester's cheap though. Only a couple of quid from VWP

Re: Panic - update

I've changed the battery, checked the position of the plug leads, checked all the wiring connections and it still won't start. It did turn over but after a few turns the battery (new one) voltage dropped to around 12.4. I did get a puff of smoke from the rear exhaust but I'm at my wits end here!

Any ideas welcome

BTW which way around are the plug leads meant to be? According to the Clymer manual photos it looks as though the bottom pole from the coil leads to the front cylinder. Is that correct?
I'm just trying to make absolutely sure that I've done everything here.
