Brian.

New to Harleys have a st1100 15 years old, cost me nowt to run, been abroad can't get the bloody harley out the garage,25 degrees today.

It will be the switch, the key is just a mechanical lock to stop switch moving.
The switch makes the elec contacts that you need to sync the system.

As when riding, unlock with key then put key in pocket and just use switch to control functions.
