06 Dyna inner primary bearing shot

I did a lot of trouble free miles in Denmark and the rally was brilliant plus the bike got me home but......on the last day I heard a rumbling from the primary.

Clutch out in neutral - rumble, Clutch in - no rumble. Not an unusual failure on these models I understand. What happens is that the inner primary roller bearing wears ridges on the inner race that's pressed onto the input shaft.

(Bear in mind that I haven't stripped the primary yet so this info is from web searches.)

The parts I need are:

12052A OIL SEAL, INNER PRIMARY
34091-06 RACE BEARING, INNER
9231 BEARING, ROLLER
786A BOLT, SEAL x 5
60547-06 GASKET, PRIMARY COVER
34934-06 GASKET, INNER PRIMARY / CRANKCASE

The inner race 34091-06 is now 34091-08 on the 08 models. Does anyone know if this updated part will retro fit the 06 or has the input shaft on the later models changed as well.

Also, for anyone who has had this happen, have you got the old bearings so I can get the INA part number and go to a local bearing shop? These types of parts always seem to need ordering from a dealer.

At least the inner race puller / installer HD 34902B is on the tool list and while it's stripped, I can check the stator isn't about to disintegrate (another problem on these).

Any help / input appreciated, it's rally season.

The rally and the weather were so good, I'm still smiling

Re: 06 Dyna inner primary bearing shot

There is a known issue here with somw 06`s due to incorrect machining. If it has done it once it will probably do it again.
Reassemble the inner primary using the old parts. Bolt the inner primary to the tranny. Do not fasten the inner primary to the engine, or even install the bolts. Do put the gasket in though.
The old gasket should be firmly trapped. If it is loose, or you can fit a feeler gauge in the gap you have a problem.
We have had to install new tranny cases & inner primarys on several.
If you have this going on go to your local dealer & explain the issue.
If you have a problem you can pm me.

Re: 06 Dyna inner primary bearing shot

Thanks for the alignment tip Phil, that's interesting, I've not heard of this before. I hope it isn't that. I've started stripping the primary, just need to borrow sockets for the maishaft nut and the comp nut. BTW some people blame the auto tensioner ratcheting up too tight but my chain seemed about right tension wise.

Don't suppose you have an info on the inner race 34091-06. It is now 34091-08 on the 08 models. Do you know if this updated part will retro fit the 06 or has the main shaft changed on the 08's.

Peter

My 2006 streetbob developed the same rumble 7k miles ago on 10k. It has not changed since so have evolved my thinking to it being a 'character' of the bike.

If your work removes the rumble, please shout

Cheers, Roy

Re: 06 Dyna inner primary bearing shot

I looked back at your post Roy, sounds the same.

Anyway, I have got the primary off and the inner race and roller bearing are have had it. The snap ring was positioned correctly i.e. not obscuring the oilway and I checked the alignment as per Phil's post and this seems OK thankfully. I'm going to double check this though.

I spoke to Andy about the race puller but is out and is very popular (wonder why??) still it might be available by the time the parts come in.

Anyone know a dealer that might keep parts in stock?

Something else (Phil), I have the early bolted rotor so although the bolts seem tight enough, I was thinking of taking them out, giving it a good degrease and assembling with red loctite....or should I just leave alone?

From what I can make out in yourt oic, it looks like the rollers have been 'skidding' usually caused by misaligmnent or lack of lube.

Yes, it does look that way. I was using Formula + and the level was good. The oilway was clear. I'm hoping it was a bad batch of bearings as I don't want to do this every 10,000 miles.

Re: 06 Dyna inner primary bearing shot

That is one of the worse I have seen, must have made a lovely noise!
I don`t need to say that all those tiny slivers of hardened steel are like tiny razors, so make sure it is all well cleaned.
Good call on the rotor.

Exactly, misalignment. I have never seen a bad one that didn`t have that problem, per my previous post.
If it is only a few thou out it will cause a problem. If it is there have HD pay while they are still in the mood.

Looks scary - good luck OS

My rumble developed about 7k miles ago and has got no worse, should I worry about it?
