speedo kaput....

All,

This is driving me nuts, i have a 98 nighttrain and the speedo has now taken on a mind of its own.. It thinks i am doing around 40 when i am doing about 10 mph, as soon as I start to use it it starts from about 10mph then if i am out on a run it will start working...

I have installed a new sender cable and that has not sorted it, a right pain as I cant ride the bike thanks to all the speed cameras...

I spoke to warrs and a replacement speedo kit is 391.00 which is not really in my price range, i am keeping an eye on ebay but not much luck..

anyone got any tips or pointers, or anyone had the same problem....

thanks a bundle

-Phil

Re: speedo kaput....

Had the same on 2000 Fatboy.

Changed the sensor, had the speedo assembly apart and shot the lot with WD40, checked the wiring several times, nothing fixed it. In total had the problem for a couple of years

Last weekend, changed the Reg / rectifier unit and hey presto, speedo working perfectly again.

Puzzled ? yes me too.

Re: speedo kaput....

My speedo did it to me on my glide once, it was just after i had run the bike through the gears with the back wheel off the ground whilst the bike was on the stand. Anyway after doing it i set off on a run down to Matlock and noticed it playing up just as you have descibed, the heart sank, expecting expensive solutions, a little way further down the motorway i got into a build up of cars so i nailed it to get out of the way, when i got up into three figures the needle flicked right round, started working, and has been alright since. I don't know if this tale will be of any use, but thats what happened to me, good luck.
