Re: 16" apes on a streetbob

When I fitted my 12" apes, I used a one piece top clamp to give it more support. Then drilled through in the right places, and knocked in a couple of 6mm diameter roll pins.

He's correct, Roy. Knurling provides only limited friction and is perfectly adequate for factory supplied handlebars. But, Apes give BIG leverage and that's the problem.

Your options are:
  1. Pegged bars - this is a DIY job and straightforward if you take care
  2. Buy apes with the risers already welded on (check out the catalogues and you will find them)
  3. Insert a sliver of emery cloth into the knurling for more friction.
The best options are 1 & 2!

Re: 16" apes on a streetbob

Thanks for this, I have the standard one piece top clamp so will just drill and thrill that. Question (feel a bit thick asking this, however ...)

Ordering my extended brake line ...

The banjo bolts on my standard line are 3/8" and 7/16" socket head size. In catalogues like bikers choice and drag specialities, they only sell brake fittings in 3/8" and 7/16". Is the size same as the socket head size? If not, do you know the size of 2006 dyna front brake fittings?

Please let me know, Roy

Re: 16" apes on a streetbob

I did exactly the same with my bob. It was quite easy. However I did weld two pins on the underside of the bars that located in the top of the risers, only about 1/2 inch but enough to counter the large moment applied under breaking. Make sure the pins are sufficient thickness to resist the shear force also.

The wiring did need extending and I did this at the headstock, the old fashioned way! soldered joints!

Its done 2 years like this now with no problem.

Agreed! The extra leverage of 16 inches could easily overcome the grip of the knurling. I do wonder if some high bars come with additional safety features to prevent them turning in the clamps. Might be worth a Google!

Re: 16" apes on a streetbob

On the whole roll-pin subject, so if I go for 6mm (1/4") roll pins that go through the bars and into the clamps at least 0.5" either side, this should be okay???

Should I use hi-tensile roll-pins or will ordinary steel (if you can get such a thing, need to investigate the whole roll-pin 'subject') do?

Re: 16" apes on a streetbob

All roll pins are high tensile spring steel. Try hacksawing one.
Any engineers will have them. If you can't get any...send me a pm and I'll post you a couple.
