Re: rear calliper on 08 fatboy

I thought harley would have cured this problem by now

my 86 glide has the same problem

have tried everything swapping calipers, changing lines rebuilding master cylinders but problem persists

had the same problem on another harley, ultimate cure was to fit a brembo caliper

As harley has just bought mv augusta maybe they will get some decent brakes for next year

You would need to determine if the problem is mechanical or hydraulic. Do your normal runaround on the bike and park it up.Open the bleed screw on the caliper and if the fluid spurts out under pressure then it's a hyd problem.
If when you open the bleed screw the fluid barely trickles out then the problem is mechanical, eg pistons seized in caliper, pads seized in caliper or something is not mounted correctly causing (probably) one pad to rub on the disc, plus one or two other possibilities.

Ah, that's it then, it takes the factory at least 3-4years to sort new problems

Getting really down about it now, the only thing not replaced now is the hose & the disc, I will have a floating disc tomorrow, its not building up pressure, when I crack open the nipple there is nothing, I have removed the calliper and pads over & over, everything seems to be working fine, I have moved the wheel so that it is parallel to the calliper mounting bracket, plus tried it in all other positions, but as soon as you pump up the rear pedal it is rubing on the disc, & is pretty stiff to turn. This might be how they all are I just need poeple to see if theres are stiff or hot and dusty when they have been out, this bike has now only covered 700 miles and I have not felt the pleasure of owning a new bike at all,

Thanks in advance Frankie

Re: rear calliper on 08 fatboy

the problem will be worse on hot days as once the disc starts to rub it generates heat which causes the fluid to expand putting more pressure on the disc generating more heat......

Definitely not mate, this is a fault and was so from new, this is a dealer problem and they should sort.

Re: rear calliper on 08 fatboy

just a thought,
had the same problem on a trials bike and it turned out to be the master cylinder piston. Tiny particles of grit/sand causing the piston to bind in the cylinder so keeping a small pressure on pads. I dismantled the entire system and cleaned with break cleaner, reassembled with new fluid.

To be honest I think Ive had enough now, 2 Harleys 2 Lots of warranty and not just little bits, new crank cases and all sorts on the previous bike, it seems these bikes cost the earth but are made to a tight budget, I have been riding Jap bikes for 32 years and no probs. When you read about some of the problems on here its as if they were built in Korea, in fact they would probably be better quality if they were

Think you may find the opposite in that Harley Brakes will be fitted on the MV's
