Re: Floating Disks ?

I fitted a 5u2uk! GSXR flouting disk (£10 for 2 from the scrap yard, took some cutting) on my wide glide front end.- To be honest I didn't notice much improvement in the stopping,- but the big advantage is floating disks are much less susceptible to warping. I'd recommend them.- I'm now looking for a 10" floater for the back.

Would agree with SX 150, I did'nt notice any difference. I fitted front & rear Ferodo discs and matching pads and they cost a lot more than £20 but were a doddle to fit.

Re: Floating Disks ?

I have fitted them to a couple of bikes

made a big difference when you have solidly mounted calipers (brembo, performance machine, harrison)

harley manufacturing tolerances are so loose that you will end up with a shudder in the brakes without floating discs becasue solidly mounted discs will not run 100% true, this is ok with floating calipers but nbg with fixed calipers

Re: Floating Disks ?

I recently fitted floaters to the front and rear after noticing that both pairs of pads were wearing unevenly. To the extent that the front were nearly down to the metal on one side & nearly new on the other. With the new discs and Lyndall pads there's a definate improvement - Just another stock item of Harley crap that has to be replaced for the bike to perform properly ...

Yup - 13inch Harrisons, but with a pair of Billet-6 calipers. Seem satisfactory....

Fixed discs really only work with moving calipers. My first Harley had fixed discs both ends when such things were very new - the calipers could move sideways on their mounting pins, but that was crucial as they had only one piston each.

Most cars have fixed discs and moving calipers and have to stop a darned sight more than we do, so cannot be too bad.

Re: Floating Disks ?

The floating discs do have a negative on Harleys in that the areas around the "float bushes" on the chrome ones can be prone to rusting if you use the bike in the wet.
