Mikuni carb.

Right lads we question.

Going to buy a Mikuni 42 for my fatboy this winter to see if it will cure my carb icing as i have been advised it should. The question is when you change over to Mikuni is there a noticeable difference in the fuel consumption or is it negligible.

From a new club member.

Re: Mikuni carb.

Depends how well the carb is set up, and how well the one thats on it now is set up, you will find a noticeable improvement in performance. Consumption is usually about the same, all depends like i say on set up, but it is a slightly more efficient carb.
must say i aint convinced about the icing bit, then again i'm willing to be educated.

Re: Mikuni carb.

had a late model cv on my panhead - it worked ok

put a hs40 mikuni on the same bike, it worked great, better response and more power

didn't notice any difference in fuel consumption

Re: Mikuni carb.

The Mikuni won't stop the icing, fuel additives go a long way to help getting a better fuel burn and properly lubed or nylon inner cables will with help reducing the risk of them sticking.

Re: Mikuni carb.

Running dual Edelbrock Qwiksilvers on a rather long (12") manifold, I've looked long & hard into ways to stop/prevent/reduce icing, and have decided it aint worth even trying to ride far in coolish weather cos of it.

Aircraft can suffer from it, and obviously it can be fatal, so their manifolds are usually electrically heated to keep the vacuum-side warmer.

As Mort says, the Mikuni will still be subject to icing on your bike. The only two sure ways to prevent it are to heat the manifold or fit an injector in its place. You could heat the manifold using an electric blanket type-thingy, or run exhaust gas up & around it. If you really want to ride it over winter, look in caravan shops for 12v heater tape, then wrap that around your manifold.

The additive does seem to work a bit, but not enough (for my FXR) to allow a lot of extra cold weather miles. It just delays the appearance of ice.

Actually, writing this has made me realise that buying the Super Glide last week was actually an even better idea than I'd thought. No more ferkin ice to contend with.

Whoopee
