Re: compensater

Check to see if you are still getting a charge. More than likely the stator breaking up.

Re: compensater

Any vibration? Compensator coming loose or springs breaking up likely to cause serious vibration as well as noise I would guess. Only takes a few minutes to drain and pull the outer primary off, so suggest you do that first. Check the condition of the primary chain tensioner, and the chain tension itself. Also look for bits of metal lying around in there. Someone complaine dof losing teeth from the starter ring recently, so check starter pinion and starter ring gear.
If primary looks OK, and no sign of loose or damaged comp sprocket, you could check the cam chain tensioner shoes (see tech tips).

Before pulling anything, you could try the old screwdriver stethescope, to see if you can tell where the noise is from. Get long, sturdy screwdriver. Press handle against ear, and hold tip against various parts of motor to hear clearly what noise comes from where.

Re: compensater

You haven't said if you can hear it when you run the motor at standstill; if you hear nothing when it's stopped, and it only happens when you're moving (and gets worse on over-run), that suggests a transmission issue, rather than an engine issue. It's not an '06 with an inner primary bearing failure is it?
