Another exhaust queery..

Went to a meeting friday, and it was noted how loud my exhausts were,,

Rather than highjack the other thread on exhausts thought I would start this one..

When I got home 11-15pm, my misses said she could here me coming through town, a mile away,, I dont want to bring attention to myself, with Mr Plod nor upset the neighbors..

I have often thought they were overly loud,, They are V & H fishtails ,, is there a way I can quieten them down without altering anything,, IE can some sort of baffles be slid up inside ? and not having to make any adjustments to the fuel injection system,, without compromising the exceptianal speed and get up and go..

If and when I go for a ride with friends, I always stay at the back of the pack, due to the ear shattering noise..

The bike is a Road King Classic, anniversary,, with top end changed to S & S and one of them flappy things on the side, It is a 1450 upgraded to 1550 or 1650 (I think) with a Jimy 6 speed overdrive fitted.. As in the photo below,

My Softail has I beleive what they call slashcuts with no baffles, and this I can keep the noise down with lighter use of throttle and gears, and it sailed through the mot,, but with the R.K there is no way I can ride it quietly.

Any advice would be gratefully received..

Thanks.

A couple of spuds should do the trick Mo.
There are some slip in baffles of different sizes on ebay
don't know if they work though.

Re: Another exhaust queery..

Back in the seventies, they used to advertise a waste-gate valve for British bikes, cable operated, so you could switch from noisy to quiet when Mr Plod was around...

At Minehead, the only stand that wasn't full of cheap and nasty tat was from Kess-Tech, a German maker of TUV approved exhausts which are switchable either automatically or manually from loud to quiet. They are totally street legal, even in Germany, and will pass the tough German drive-by test. They are not cheap, but they seem to tick all your boxes.

The way things are going, we might find ourselves forced to adopt something similar before too long...

look at this way mo, if Mrs mo can hear you that far away, it means she would have no excuse not to be waiting at the door with a cold beer

Mo. I think you're going about this the wrong way. You like the sound of your pipes, don't you? Instead of trying to find a way to be quieter, why not find a riding buddy who has a bike with louder pipes? By comparison, yours will seem quiet, and your neighbours will appreciate you when you're riding home alone.

Of the twelve houses in our close, four of the blokes have come over to me during the past eighteen months to say how much they like the sound of the bike, which has a very loud Supertrapp 2 into 1, whatever time of night I get home.

No one has ever complained about the noise, and cars move swiftly towards the curb when I come up behind them. Revel in your loud pipes, they might well be a life-saver.

The MOT guy didn't even blink when it started up, mentioning only that it covered up some of the engine noise and that that was no bad thing, LOL.

Cheers "Baff",, I am surounded by wrinkly`s who I dont think appreciate the lovely tone of a Harley,,

As yet I have not heard one with such a blattery sound as mine and not one that is so loud even taking it easy through the revs and gears ,,

Old Ron from the Foresters said as I started up on Friday night,, "TO LOUD"
and there is to my knowledge no one as old as him still riding,, 72+ (with due respect to Ron) ,,
So has heard some noisey bikes in his time,, Just a bit worried that`s all ,,

Re: Another exhaust queery..

Is there a join in the pipe Mo or are they one peice,?

If there is a join you could slip a baffle in, they come in various sizes,
