Re: Inner Primary Bearing Failure

Maybe the same quality issue as with INA camshaft inner bearings. Everyone knows that when replacing a camshaft inner bearing, you must use a TORRINGTON manufactured/branded one.

Re: Inner Primary Bearing Failure

Don't ignore what Phil said because if that is where your problem lies changing the bearing is NOT a cure, it will happen again.

Re: Inner Primary Bearing Failure

Mate of mine had two go on his 06 dyna low!..
After replacing the second he made some slight mods to the casing by enlarging the small oil feeder hole next the bearing & drilled another next to that for good measure!..

He thought the problem was not enough oil getting to the bearing, reckoned the clip holding the bearing blocked the oil feed hole!..

Told him the other day about this thread & and what Phil had said, his reply was i'm glad i no longer own that bike!, as he now owns an 07 Fatboy!........

Re: Inner Primary Bearing Failure

Out of interest, whenever we talk about IPB failure its always the 06 dynas. Do the 06 softails (i.e nightrain) also have the same issue? And if not, why not?

Cheers, Roy

Good question Roy, maybee it's the tranny casing thats not centred correctly and they may differ from those on softtails!..

See post 26 by Phil!.......

Re: Inner Primary Bearing Failure

Phil PM'd me to say about which Harleys were affected:

Dynas & Touring only, they use the same Gearbox Cases & Inner Primaries.

It only affected a certain number that had machining inconsistencies.

Softail casings were not affected.

This feels like a well known problem. I may write to Harley and ask them for compensation towards my IPB. Will keep you posted.

Re: Inner Primary Bearing Failure

Have just sent my letter off to HD due to my IPB going whilst in France last week (ruined out holiday) I am also going to talk to my local dealer about the tranny casings and get a quote after reading Phils advice. Not sure I am confident enough to do the work myself. Its also depressing the hell out of me that I am getting ready for a fight with the company that I have admired, respected and obsessed about since I was ten years old

Re: Inner Primary Bearing Failure

Well a week has gone by, heard nothing from HD in response to my letter, not really holding out much hope, but noticed how many other Dyna owners have been compensated for the same problem (on other forums) with their bikes out of warranty, mainly in the states though.
Chester HD want my bike in for two days next week (as the IPB appears to have gone again). Part of me wants to attempt the job myself, and the other part knows i will end up in a worse situation than I already am. Still riding the bike, but the noise from the primary when the Bike is in Neutral with clutch out is louder than ever. Another point is if i were to do the job myself I am still not sure what bearing puller I will need from the club tool hire list and how do I get hold of a oil seal remover/installer as stated in the manual.

Just one last thing, if I managed to get the inner primary cover off myself, do you think a dealer or indie would change the bearing and seal for me? We are just so bloody broke at the moment I am just looking for the best possible way to get the bike fixed.
On top off all this if what Phil says is correct it might be the tranny casings causing the bearing failure. If that is the case (no pun intended) then i am well and truly F*cked
Why did I have to be so bl**dy obsessed with a make of motorcycle that apppears at times to give their owners so much grief
Sorry to go on.............just wish i was a mechanic with all the right tools and a garage.............and a second bike........ Going to bed now..goodnight.

Oh and all that bollox about preferences (see me sig) is just irony in my case, either that or I truly am a hypotwat
