Cam chain tensioners, "Yes this old one again!!"

Is it possible to fit the 07 cam chain hydraulic tensioners to a 2003 Road King?

I already have the up graded oil pump and cam plate,

My bike has now done 64,000 miles and it is time to check the old tensioners,

So as we all know they will need changing now or in the very near future I wondered if I could fit the new and upgraded ones to my bike?

Sure is Dude... seems an ever popular way to go.
Got the bits to do my 04 RK over the winter , Andrews do a kit.
You'll need to change your (new) cam plate tho.

Re: Cam chain tensioners, "Yes this old one again!!"

Thanks for that Vince,

I have contacted Andrews this morning 05/09/08 lets see what they suggest?

I'll let you know what they say should I get a reply.

Post below;

Hi there

I have a twin cam 88 Harley Davidson Road King with 64000 miles on the clock,

All details are set out below,

I would like to replace my cam chain with an Andrews geared or hydraulic conversion kit (which ever is best?)to my bike, all details are set out below,

Can you please advise on the kit I would need to purchase,

As the mileage would suggest I use the bike for touring, which includes typical European motorway and steep mountain roads in all sorts of temperatures, I have noticed that my engine performers much better in a cooler climate than in a hotter one, and “pinking” is a problem I have not been able to extinguish, even after a series of dyno tuning!!

The octane fuel I am using is around 98

I am aware that Crank run out can be a problem on these engines, so if you have any advice on that it would be very appreciated,

I am using HD Screamin eagle fully synthetic oil.

Should you need any further information please don’t hesitate to ask,

It has had a screamin eagle upgrade from 1450 to 1550 the compression ratio it 10.5:1,

The cams I have in there are SE-211 25152-00,

The pistons are screamin eagle pro high compression forged pistons,

The cylinder heads are 16952-99c the spring can accommodate up to .575” valve lift cam shaft kits and can rev up to 6500 RPM

The push rods are non standard 18403-03 -.060”,

I have also fitted a Screamin Eagle Billet Cam Plate and
High Volume Oil Pump 25283-07

Cylinder heads and accessories 16952-99c
Pistons 22868-00
Barrels 16546-99
Mikuni carburettor 28040-02
Intake manifold 29635-99
Cam kit 25152-00
Pushrods 18403-03
Adjustable ignition kit 23704-01
Eagle Billet Cam Plate and
High Volume Oil Pump 2528307

You can't fit the hydraulic tensioners to the old style chains, you have to change the cam plate, cams, chains etc. Just order the kit from Andrews - the 54N will be a good choice of cam for your compression.

Nice to see a TC with reasonable mileage on it. I know of plenty of high mileage Evo's. Maybe sometime you could do a write up on living with your TC. Hope I have not hijacked your post.

Thanks Madmax I’ll look in to that, just a couple of things though, is the new Andrews conversion a fit and forget alternative?
Or will the tensioners ware out just like the Harley ones?

I must admit I am just looking into this, with the mileage I have on the bike I’ve not had a problem with the stock set up, I’ve changed them three times to date, so I may just decide to keep with them!!

Tony Cross I’m sure I am not up amongst the big high milears!! But yes I’ll bare it in mind!!

Re: Cam chain tensioners, "Yes this old one again!!"

Did that in 3 1/2 years on an Evo from new. These days I am very chesty and lose out in winter. On top of that is the cost of fuel. Just bought a 2009 Road King. Not got it yet but I don' think it will have 45000 on when it goes for it's first MOT.
