In my experience the stock 96 is more powerful than the 88 with a full Stage One.
Both share similar economy.
The overheating on the 96 has caused ripples but can be remedied fairly cheaply.
I have enjoyed all but the first couple of hundred of the 5000 miles on my FXDF immensely.
I bought it in January this year and had no problems at all apart from one minor recall and the annoying popping on deceleration.
Having said that, my Deuce had 22000 on it when it went and ran like a good one.
Overall, I like the 96 BUT, the noisy fifth gear on the tourers really p###es me off.
However, I'm told you get used to it.
Just as well really cos I'm supposed to be collecting an 09 RK Classic this week.
Circumstances have changed and I now need to be two up alot of the time and the Bob's not really the man for the job IMO.
Won't be happy to see him go tho...

2nd that. Really happy with my stage 1 88 (streetbob), however having ridden a 96 for a day I found as stock the 96 to be smoother and quicker.

Gonna keep my 88 for a bit longer, won't be too sad when I upgrade to a 96 or whatever beast comes out for then!

Whats the overheating problem with a 96 and how is it fixed?

The overheating issue is a mystery to me (fortunately!) My 96 Street Bob never suffered from it either before or after stage 1 fitting. Mine is now two years old and has run without fault to date. Can;t ask for more than that. Hope I have'nt tempted fate by saying this.

My 07 Dyna ran real hot when brand new but now it does.nt seem so bad, either it loosened up or Ive learnt to live with it, sitting in traffic is when you notice it most. A good indicator to the temp is when the ol love spuds start to roast Stage 1ing mine may have also helped (Force filter, 2-1 V&H and PC3)

Had my 07 Fatboy since May and found it an excellent motor. Does get hot around the naggers when stopped in traffic but will be improved when I stage 1, I'm told.

Have the softail custom TC96, part exd a TC88 softail for it, noticed difference instantly, the TC88 was staged, unstaged the 96 was better in every way, now its staged its just so much better than the 88 ever was
