| fuse blown again
before heading to brioghtona bike wouldn't start, fuel pump not starting up i found it was the 15amp fuse to the ecm unit today on way home from brighton engine management light came on but bike running fine(it was very wet so put it down to that), then fuse blew again nearly at home seems odd to go twice, any ideas folk, does this sound like an earthing thing? |

Had a problem with the engine management light coming on (06 Nightrain ) intermittently. The bike ran fine. It turned out to be a dodgy voltage regulator every now and then allowing the alternator to chuck out 18 volts. Might be a similar thing if you are blowing fuses.

| Re: fuse blown again
If you've had anything in bits recently, might be a good idea to check that no wires from that fuse have become trapped or chafed by displacing them. Especially under the tank or seat. I only have wiring diagram for '03 Softail, but on that, the 15A ECM fuse feeds the fuel pump, but via the power relay, and another 15A fuse. A fuel pump issue should in theory blow the fuel pump fuse, but as the two are effectively in series, and both have the same rating, either could blow. Good idea to check the wire to the pump for damage. Other outputs include the ECM itself, so check for potential chafing or short circuit around the plug area for that, and the two injectors and ignition coil, both via the power relay, and I guess the wires for all three will be fed under the tank. Output from ECM fuse was blue/gray, fed to relay and ECM unit, and output from power relay, was yellow/black to injectors and coil. Obviously, it would be far better for you to check the wiring diagram for your own bike, which could be substantially different... 37 years ago, I had a continual fuse problem on an old Triumph single, eventually traced to a chafed wire under the tank. When the bars were turned a particular way, it shorted on to the frame. After months of not finding it, I eventually used the non-recommended method of shorting out the fuse, and looking for the smoke... Definitely not recommended (but it worked) ...
