The temporary belt is just that - a roadside repair to get you home. It does not provide a long-term solution and must be replaced as soon as practical. Sooner, rather than later, the damn primary cover is gonna have to come off to fit a proper new belt.

My point is that, in a world where most riders consider roadside recovery to be more important than carrying tools, why delay things longer than necessary? Spend the money on a decent recovery package, get recovered to a dealer or to your home and do a proper job.
I had a belt almost break on me in Turkey a few years ago, and last summer only 15 miles from home in the worst rain I have ever seen. With a spare belt I could have made it home and then to a dealer to get it fixed, without waiting in the pissing rain! Storrage on an ultra is no problem. Recovery is fine, but I prefer being able to fix things and continue with my trip.

Thanks for all the tips, I will add them to the "things to think of list"

Re: Emergency Belt Drives

There is a whole raft of things one might consider taking on a journey, just in case. The danger of doing so is not having enough room to take any luggage! An umbrella and recovery insurance takes up little room....

Er I do carry an umbrella, a fold up chair and a tarpaulin on long trips. As well as a tool kit, torch, puncture repair outfit, lounge suit and accessories, an ipod, camera, mobile and recovery insurance, together with oversuit, leathers and waterproofs. Plus chargers, maps and stache of cash.

And a giant adjustable spanner...just in case.

Dont everybody??

Re: Emergency Belt Drives

My first Harley had spoked wheels and tubed tyres and I still have the bijou scissor jack I used to carry, for getting a wheel out to repair a puncture. I don't carry that any more. Everything around us is so much more reliable.

What have I said....

Re: Emergency Belt Drives

I like the idea of a jack...but that would be a bit too much.
