I had similar problem to you it was the starter relay there only a fiver from the dealer so I'd start there.

Yeh, I checked the starter relay first and they were ok.
With the advice generously given by contributors on this board, I figured out that the electrical connections were fine but that the problem lay within the solenoid. (The bike started ok when the solenoid plunger was depressed)
Finally, the problem was diagnozed as faulty windings within the Solenoid casing which gave fluctuating voltages >12v and then <5v. A new solenoid casing has been ordered.
