| Re: Fuel Injection to Carbs on a TC96
Cheers Must admit one of my 1st thoughts on changing to carb was purely 'aesthetic' in that I wanted that traditional harley slow tickover, however believe that this is only possible with the long stroke engines and not the TC88/96 short strokes. Is this correct? Think is I was building a bike up from the ground I'd probably go carb for ease of wiring etc, however unless things start going wrong with my EFI (given its a gizmo stuck behind the air filter) I'll stick. Possibly consider a andrews 21 cam change over the winter to give a bit more performance (this is if I don't go with my current cyclic thought about changing my streetbob for a nightrain ...) You should be able to get a slow tick over with the conversion as the ignition unit (AMM-P3) is independent of the old ignition system, all it uses is the crank sensor to fire it. Matter of fact if you scroll down to the bottom of this page and click on "medium" and "slow" you will hear the difference, you could even take it lower if you wanted. Yes it will run slower but not as slow as a evo. I think it picks up faster, and will run smother at lower revs, Consumption is about the same at general speeds but uses more above 70 mls per hr I get a average of 10mls per ltr, it starts easy , and in general a much nicer bike to ride. I have now covered 20,000 after the carb conversion, and as i stated its now user friendly!!! JOHN

Was wondering when you'd reply ![]() The smoother at low speeds is of interest, one of my gripes about EFI is it can be as lumpy as an old matress below 30 (which I have been known to do on occasion ..) However, I am open to there may be something that could be done on my EFI to make it smoother at low revs??? |

regarding the lower tick over of the long stroke engines, the lowest recommended tick over speed for them is 700 rpm - the normal recommendation is 900 rpm, anything lower is not very healthy for the main bearings . Anything ticking over at the 500 rpm mark is effectively (and efficiently) knocking seven bells out of itself.

The Idle has to be above 850rpm with Delphi Injection though as at lower speeds the alternator does not produce enough amps to sufficiently power up the fuel pump & ECM. It doesn`t allow itself to be lowered further as a safeguard.

But you can take the tickover of a carbureted twincam as low as 7-800rpm.

EFI twin cams tickover at 800rpm anyway once the engine is warmed up in order to manage the engine temperature
