Bearing Swarf

Hi all,

I decided to change my primary fluid tonight when I got home. Drained it all checked the magnet and there were a few bits of swarf but nothing special.

Anyway, tipping the oil away I came across some bits of metal that look suspiciously bearing related...

Now I have previously drained the shovel transmission into my container (and various other things) and like a muppet hadn't bothered to clean it out.

I did find some bearing bits in the shovel trans, looked like this...

So my question is, does the top picture look like anything likely to be lurking in a Twin Cam primary or is it just shovel remains?

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Bearing Swarf

i dont think bits that size would come through the drain hole on a twin came
so it looks likely to be the old bits from before
if they were from the bike you would have known by the noise and vibes!!!
good luck

Cheers John,

the pictures are a bit deceptive, the parts are fairly small.

I pulled the outer primary cover off and there was no other scrap bits inside at all, nothing, it all looked ok...

No different vibes than normal riding home but the primary did seem noisier than usual, probably just the heat though.

Cheers,
Rob.

Re: Bearing Swarf

Top pic are the remains of a Throw Out Bearing. Second could be anything.

Cheers Phil, that's what I was hoping...I think the bottom pics are remains of throwout bearing as well, came from when I took the kicker cover off the shovel trans. Whoever fixed the bearing didn't clean it out very well!

Note to self: Clean the drip tray out _BEFORE_ draining something

Saves all that paranoia

Re: Bearing Swarf

The bits in the first picture look like the remains of a Roller Thrust bearing to me.

Could be a clutch push rod bearing but not sure if or how this could get out from the centre of the clutch. Also I would have thought you would notice a change in your clutch operation.
