| Can I have Harley sound without stage 1 Here’s a daft question, I’ve got a tidy standard 2001 1450 RK classic, me and the wife just potter round the UK and Europe. EFI gives me 50+ per gal and the power suits the breaks (best way to put it). Can I free up a bit of that Harley sound just with other “silencers” without splashing out on stage 1 air filter and EFI gizmo or remap, id so what brand, cash tight, any ideas please. Thanks

| Re: Can I have Harley sound without stage 1
I removed the standard mufflers from my 2001 FXD Dynaglide, and replaced them with standard mufflers from a Sportster, after first knocking out the baffle caps inside with a long iron bar. No modifications to the pipes otherwise, and appearance is standard with a better sound, though not offensive at all. My previous Sportster 1200 with slash cuts became a pain after 100 miles or so, the noise becoming a drone on a long m/way run. This has kept me amused for years, and up to 600 miles in a day on several occasions. And cheap, 'cos nobody wants the old pipes. I suppose that you would have a possible hunt to make sure that they were the old non-cat pipes. Using a 'Colourtune' plug showed that no problems were created with the mixture (carbs) and no re-jetting was needed, but check your own set up carefully. My engine does not run any hotter, although it does run quite hot anyway, so this must be checked if you go this cheapo way. I have run like this for 25,000 miles. Happy burbling Ed |

Ed this is just the sort of answer I was hoping for, I'd take care over the plug /mixture not to blast off like a git straight away. Burble on brother. Dai

I'm not familiar with RK mufflers, but you may be able to do the same mod Ed described on your own. Worth a look. Just need a suitable tool.

I have an 883 sporty, it came with stage 1 and slash cut pipes, but I got the original pipes in the deal, I thought it was a little quiet, so I used the long screwdriver and bang some nice holes in the baffle plates of the originals and put them on, runs like a dream and sounds great, still farts occasionally, but what the hell. Hi Mick was it a carb or EFI motor, I'm chicken when it comes to EFI and messing about, and messing about is half the fun of owning a hog i think. Dai
