How long to carry out 1st service?

So how long should I expect my dealer to take doing the 1st service on an 09 Street Bob?

I've had one done on my 09 and one done on my old 07 SB and the times taken were vastly different by 2 different dealers (no problems reported on either bike).

Also does anyone know if there are any mods on the 09 'cos it seems a helluva lot quicker than the old one although it might be my imagination

Re: How long to carry out 1st service?

I've just been quoted 2 - 3 hours "waiting time" for the first 1000 mile service on my 09 glide, but if that's the one you mean the labour is foc so in less you're in a hurry the longer they take over it the better I guess.

The dealership have a book with guidance times for most 'operations' they will need to do on your bike, from servicing to full engine rebuild etc.

Any HD dealer [HD or grey market] will be able to quote you against their book which is given by HD to all dealers (in the same way any car/bike dealer will get one from the manufacturer) and the grey dealer that I used for a little bit also had one.

Cheers, Roy

Re: How long to carry out 1st service?

Thanks so far chaps.
Specifically, when I waited for my 07 to be serviced, I was at the dealers about 3 or 4 hours yet when my 09 was serviced it took just over 1 hour. That begs the question...can a 1st service be done on a Street Bob in just over an hour? just looking for a bit of peace of mind really.

Re: How long to carry out 1st service?

Doing it at home - yes.

Its worth buying a service manual and this lays out the requirements of each service, however they tend to boil down to oil change (engine, primary and gearbox), every 10k change the plugs, check the air filter and all nuts and bolts are tight, tyres have enough tread etc.

However your need to get any servicing in the warranty period done by a dealer to maintain your warranty.

Not sure if this has helped ...

That was most likely because in the second case yours was the first bike they serviced, whereas you had to wait on the first occasion for them to do someone else's bike before they turned to yours.

A first service is an oil and filter change and a variety of checks to ensure the bike is OK. For peace of mind buy the factory workshop manual and parts list! Essential bedtime reading....

Graham

Out of interest, if you buy the factory service manual and bits and then service the bike yourself in the warranty period, is your warranty affected?

Instinctively I would say it is, however remember a discussion with the grey dealer who used to service my bike that you just needed to prove you'd used the right bits. Sounds like tosh, would appreciate a qualified view

Re: How long to carry out 1st service?

Apparently the person/shop carrying out the service has to use genuine parts AND has to be V.A.T. REGISTERED. This applies to the motor industry as a whole. I believe this is a directive from the E.U.
Pat.

my bikes just coming up to its first service and I hope it is fairly comprehensive as a new bike has to bed in and I hope they will check all the necessary adjustments apart from the oil change.

That's my point.
To carry out oil and filter change, change primary and gear oil, adjust steering head bearings and carry out all the other checks on the 1st service schedule listed in the owners manual as well as road test, well...1 hour seemed a tad too quick to do it all.

Don't want somebody coming back at the next service and giving me a list of jobs that weren't done when they should have been. However in the absence of any comments to the contrary so far, I'll assume that it has been done properly
