IPB went in France

Yeh i know there are a few threads on this problem, but just thought i would get some up to date views and /or assistance.

Spent the last ten days in France, the pro's great roads, brilliant first two days spent with Paul and Sue and St Pol (I think most of you know where i mean) and fpr some of the time everything was ok.

Plan was to get to Chamonix. Rode through the mother of all thunder storms and thought I had shorted out my alarm? But thats a differents story. Some of you already know about how communicatios masts set off alarms and that disconnecting them before you travel might be your best option

Rode to Troyes HD to get alarm sorted and noted a rumble in the primary casing. Yup I have an 06 Dyna (FXDBi) already had it serviced (15,000 miles)
No they did not change out the bearing,
Yes, I know the dealers has been told not to do it anymore, and I have read all the threads.
The long and the short of all this is that one very expensive hotel stay and about £200 later we/I thought we were on our way with a new bearing. About another 1500 miles and the bloody rumble is back.

I guess what i am asking is:

1 Am I going to get my money back from HD for the original job in France?
2 Will my local dealer do the job again free of charge and charge bloody Troyes HD in France? I suppose only me dealer can answer that one?
3 Has anyone else had this problem lately (aside from the previous threads on this issue)?

Sorry guys, but what was supposed to be a trip of a life time turned into a bloody expensive F*ck up, I am pissed whilst writing this. glad to be back home, but p*ssed off about my bike, and very broke

I have next week off to make a number of calls, but any up to date advice on this issue would be appreciated.

Re: IPB went in France

I`ll chime in.

How many miles when you had to have it changed in France?

Answers:

1/ No, I doubt it.

2/ Have it pulled apart & inspected. Does it fall into this parameter...:

If you have had the bearing changed more than once, & you have a Dyna or Bagger you may have a bigger issue.

With the bearing removed lightly fasten the inner primary to the engine & trans. Check that the trans main shaft is in the centre of the hole. It is obvious at a glance.

There was a machining issue on some 06`s & 7`s that did not centre the mainshaft in the bearing causing rapid wear & multiple failures. The bearing can fail at between 5 & 10 thousand miles.

We have seen quite a few of these. The only fix is to replace the tranny case & inner primary.

We have only seen this issue on Tourers & Dynas.

IF IT DOES, PM me & we can work on it.

3/ See above.

Re: IPB went in France

After lots of deliberating I decided to do the job myself. Not hard to strip down the primary but i am pretty sure that dealership in France did not do what they said they did. The bearing has quite a few ridges on the rollers and there were iron filings on the drain plug. It makes a noise when you turn it whilst its in its seating. But we only did 500 miles from getting it fixed and noticing the noise again. I need to pull the bearing and I will do what Phil has suggested about checking the trannt alighnment. I have no idea how i can prove i was fiddled by the French dealership (if I was). But when I went to take the starter off as per the manual there was no way it had been off before, Although I guess you might get the inner primary off without removing the starter. The job took only three hours tops, is that about how long it would take? because Chester HD wanted the bike for two days.

Anyway hopfully with all the advice on this site I will get the bike back together by the end of the week.

Re: IPB went in France

And yet the saga continues (what a year). Took the primary casing to dealership to have the IPB pulled, only way I could get it done because of work being so shite at the moment. Went back for the casing and it appears that the bearing is badly shot. Its probably due to the inner race not being changed in France. There is no way I am going to get that off, so dealership are going to have to pick the bike up, but looks like I am off the road for at least a couple of weeks now....and NOW the sun is out

I mentioned what Phil says about the tranny casings, so they are going to check that out, and the main drive and clutch bearings (I think) Apparently HD Customer services have been trying to get in touch as they have a case open on my bike. Will call them today............All I am really worried about is being able to get the bike back in time for Walesby. Will car's be allowed in?. Well at least I had a go, but I think I will stick to Social Work and just change my oil ocassionally.

Re: IPB went in France

Well, hope you get a result from them. Sounds reasonably promising...

If you had the bike from new, and if the failure was caused by a manufacturinjg defect, like the misalignment issue, you may still have a claim under Sale of Goods...

Re: IPB went in France

Nice lady at HD siad they will keep my case open. Looked at the inner race and it is marked but cannot feel any damage, and there is no play on the main shaft. Packed up all the parts in a large box all marked up separately for collection on Wednesday.

Just have to be patient now. I don't know about you guys but anything wrong with my bike and I plunge into the depths of depression, although I am a miserable twat at the best of times. But it makes you think how shallow one can be about material possessions, when there are others so much worse off

Re: IPB went in France

Well after nearly two weeks in the shop I should be getting my bike back tomorrow. It appears that there were some dowl pins missing which I found out today was not my mistake but something to do with 06 Dyna's. On 07's they put the pins in, which in turn tighten the primary so less strain on the IPB (I think) I still might have a fight on my hands with HD UK to get reimbursed for the work in France, and may have to pay up front for some of the work done hear. But after over three weeks with no bike I don't care ( the credit card will have to take the strain again) At least I get it back and get to ride again
