Replacing a Switch - Help / Advice

Bike: 2005 Ultra Classic
Problem: Left Hand Audio Switch totally fallen apart.

Has anyone had the pleasure of replacing indiavidual switches on HD switch gear? If so any advice, any do's or don'ts.

Do replacement switches come with anywires attached to splice in to the existing loom or is it a solder job?

Any thoughts, help or advice prior to starting this task would be appreciated.

Thanks the forum and all you lot out there are a great source of info and I for one appreciate all your help as a newbie.

Thanks Mark.

Mark,

The mantra that often gets rolled out here is that you should have the appropriate workshop manual and parts list for your bike. They will help answer your questions.

There is a link on HDH to on-line versions of the manuals which should be some help. Switches are in Section 2. On my older bike the switches are shown in my parts list as including the attached wiring.

You will have to dismantle the left switch lower & solder the new switch into the wiring.

Re: Replacing a Switch - Help / Advice

When I replaced my switch housings with chrome ones, I had to dismantle everything....including cruise control switches. I found the manual to be quite useful, but the best thing I did was to take some close up photos of the switches before I dismantled anything. I then printed them out, and I knew how everything went back again.

Re: Replacing a Switch - Help / Advice

In terms of cost, I priced this all recently. An individual switch (circa £60) costs about half as much as going for the complete replacement both sides, housings and switches with 60" of wiring with all deutch connectors - US still is more competitive, although Jersey HD had everything in stock.

This is on a streetbob/dyna - so yours maybe slightly different. Its worth pricing these things up. My experience is that when one switch went, others went. I was lucky enough to have a spare wiring loom in my garage so robbed the switches I needed off that, however if your not in this position may be worth replacing the whole lot ??

Cheers, Roy
