I'm only getting that sort of mpg out of my 1450 RK (carb model with S/E stage one) and I tend to keep it around the speed limits.

A mate of mine only gets around 40mpg from his 2001 Carbed Dyna.
My 09 Bob almost always returns 50 + and I don't bimble around.
I guess the EFI makes the difference?

Re: bad economy

Yea I'd go with that, around 40 - 45 MPG seems about right, only time mine gets higher is when I'm tootling around the dales at warp factor tractor

Get a bigger tank, or go slower! In addition to Simon's comments on Mikunis, these bikes are not aerodynamic. The road speeds you mentioned are where most bikes of any brand start to gobble go-juice. Were you to go quicker still, consumption would really plummet, but you would also probably be glad of a more frequent rest.

Do you mean go that fast, or use that much fuel....

Re: bad economy

update

well i got back last night after a fairly hectic week end!!!
it started on Friday morning a ride to a rally in mid Germany we arrived at7pm Friday evening after covering 700mls, this was an ideal time to do a economy check so
we decided to stick to 70ish mph.
Dave rides a big glide a efi so it would be ideal to compare consumption?
well on fill-ups at 150 mls i was using 1 ltr more than Dave ( that with a 1550 203cam anda 42mukuni carb) we spent one day at the rally then the 700ml ride home!!!

So i think Simon was right the magic speed is 80mph keep below that and there's not alot of difference between carb and EFI on the consumption frontat these speeds

Re: bad economy

Something worth mentioning is the air-filter, if you have a K&N. I serviced mine for the first time last year (even though they're supposed to be OK for 60-100,000 miles) and noticed the consumption had increased, so I was getting only 38-39 mpg. I suspected I'd been over enthusiastic with the filter oil. Did the 40,000 mile service last week, and was a lot more careful, dribbling only just enough to colour the filter.
Result?
Immediate decrease in consumption, to 40-42 mpg.
You wouldn't think a wee bit of oil would have such a big effect, but it does...
