Re: cam chain tensions

Checked my cam tensioners at 19.000, like Andy Pepper said one of mine was shot, seems to always be the inner one that wears, so you need to check the one behind the cam plate Kenny!...

I went the gear driven route, expensive but piece of mind, i do a lot of miles and did'nt want to be changing them all the time, not to bad if you don't clock up mutch milage!..

Re: cam chain tensions

Is this one of those things where fitting the latest parts outlives the failed one? Having owned my 1990 bike from new it suffered several failures of things that were common on models of that time, but has never given problems since they were replaced.

May be the case with some bearing problems Graham, but cam chain tensioners, don't know!

Re: cam chain tensions

checked mine (2004 springer) a few weeks ago, 26000 miles. outer one was hardly worn, inner one only very slight wear.
there's an excellent post on here showing the ins and outs of checking them. wish i was clever enough to post the link

2004 Heritage softail
Same as! 512 s&s cams with gears from the states $280. Lots of info on this and other sites. Not a spanner myself but managed to do the change over (at 26000 sMiles) with tools from the club and an understanding wife.
Now done over 50000 and still running sweet.

If i remember right mine are S&S 510G for my dyna!
They cost a lot more than $280, more like £570, should have got them from the states by the sound of it!

May well have attempted it my self but was'nt in the club at the time, and did'nt have the use of the tool hire!

Inner cam bearing remover being the one needed most, anyway bikes done 17.000mls since, no problems!...
