Re: 6 Gallon Tank

Big tanks is horses for courses. I cant see that it would be neccessary in most of the UK. maybe the highlands and islands would have an issue. In the US and Australia distances are vast. There is one part of the 3 day ride up in the northern territory on Highway 1 between Darwin(NT) and Broome(WA) where there nearest petrol is 400+ miles. You have no choice but to take petrol in cans with you regardless how big your bike tank is. So i guess a 6 gal tank would be a benefit but you can always find a way around it. Russ werrimont designs in the USA make various 6 US gal tanks to fit all sorts of big twins. Check out the website. To convert from an injection to carb model or vice versa would be a complete balls ache. IMHO. Obviously the 6 gal units are only from injection models but i think that Russ Werrimont do make units for carb models with the outlet in the right places.

I have already sourced a 4.5US Gal Sportster custom tank from VTwin manufacturing and retrofitted it to my ladies Nightster that has the 2.5 US gal peanut tank. Its not a big job at all in fact with the std solo seat even the seat doesnt need changing. The tank was only about USD200 as well.
All the holes were in the right place so it was an easy job even though the stealership said it couldnt be done. Just make sure you buy a new injection unit seal before you start the job. just in case you tear the old one.

Re: 6 Gallon Tank

Thanks Lawnmower. The RWD 6.5 US gallon looks great, but is eye wateringly expensive! That would kill my hopes stone dead, so I will keep an eye on the used market.

While some traders are offering 'as new' tanks on US Ebay for around USD300 or more, I have seen a few sold for less than 100 bucks. So there is hope such an upgrade could be done reasonably economically. The RWD custom tanks look utterly gorgeous, but at around USD1,200....gulp!

Re: 6 Gallon Tank

Brief update. I have now tracked the auctions of several tanks on US Ebay, secondhand or showroom 'take-offs' and undamaged. Sale prices have varied from around USD75 to 130 (plus shipping etc of course!). One with a starting price of ten bucks didn't attract any bids!

I must concentrate on my swinging arm update for the time being, but may come back to this later.
