Re: 255 cams in 96

Thanks guys, you've given me much food for thought there.
The cam installation kit comes with inner bearings so they should be replaced as a matter of course.
2008 up, I believe, the stock bearings were beefed up with longer and more rollers, however I'll take your advice and ask for them to be replaced with Torringtons. I'll also ask for the lifters to be replaced.
Checking the alignment of the oil pump and crankshaft run out is something I'll just have to trust them to do.
cheers

Re: 255 cams in 96

If they don't accurately align your oil pump then it will be evident in the form of an oily residue either in or dripping from your air filter after sustained high speed. Pinion shaft run out documenting is not essential with your cam drive system, but it's good to know should you go in there again in the future you can compare the two readings. Ask them to give you the stock inner cam bearings and lifters back after the job .. Depending on how much you value your warranty I would still consider another cam grind. There are other choices that give more torque over a wider range than the 255's ..

I agrree, check out ANDREWS CAMS, S&S CAMS, WOODS CAMS.There are many others too. Take your time and if you are not sure which Cam to go for get advice from an independant source not a H-D Dealer. The H-D Dealer will only offer you a H-D Product (Screamin' Eagle) thus your choice will be limited. Try MATTS MACHINE SHOP he seems to be held in high regard by people on this site. Make sure you get the right Cams that will do what you want them to do, or it will be a very expensive mistake.
Good luck...Pat.

Re: 255 cams in 96

Interesting what you say about the oil blowing through the filter Alex, I get precisely that after a long motorway run. It was already on my (short) list of things to complain about, in fact I've already mentioned it to the dealer.
It may just encourage them to pay proper attention to it when they do the cam job.

I accept what you and Pat say about the available cams but by all accounts the 255's are the sort of thing I want and I can't bring myself to wait two years before I make any changes.
In two years time, money allowing, I may be ready to start being more adventurous.
