Pan electrics????????

As mentioned before 'electrics and me' just don't understand each other, so this thread could run on and on.

1. Ignition breaker wire runs to the top of the coil correct?
2. bottom of coil wire where does this go?
3. the ignition switch what does each of the six terminals serve and how are they wired?
4. where would you place a fuse, between where?

more question will follow... oh hum... i love electrics

Re: Pan electrics????????

Hi again Che... (this is turning into an habit...)

Correct coil wiring:

battery > fuse or contact breaker > ignition switch > one side of the coil > other side of the coil > timer/breaker

If your switch is a normal pan switch, these are the 4 positions from left to right:

parking lights (normally only rear light, sometimes, other lights fitted on front or front fender light - OFF - ignition only - ignition and lights

If your switch is a std after market one, 3 pos in general, OFF - ignition - ignition & lights

Find yourself a small multimeter, set in "ohms" or "sounder" so you can check where contact pins correspond to each position, make a drawing for future reference...

All the best from Patrick

Re: Pan electrics????????

Patrick, thank you, with lots of patience, i picked through the electrics bit by bit, nearly got there, just a few minor problems, generator light, oil light etc, then i've got it cracked... time is running out though, work next week.

Re: Pan electrics????????

Greetings Che.
Personally I don,t bother with an oil light. Unscrew the pressure switch from the oil pump and screw in a good quality gauge instead (1/4 bsp thread). Gives a much better idea of whats going on down below, and no more paranoia when the oil light flickers at tickover when the motors hot !
Less unsightly wires to contend with also.

Re: Pan electrics????????

Paperplane, once again thank you, was thinking the very same about oil pressure guage, what should it read when all is well?

Re: Pan electrics????????

Personally, I prefer a light, a guage can be scary when you watch the pressure drop to almost zero !! but it's still enough to turn the light off.
Also, you can't see an engine mounted gauge while riding, but a red oil light sure gets your attention,(saved the top end of my old FXR).
I think that with our roller bearing engines, flow is more important than pressure anyway.
Just my opinion,
cheers,
J.

Re: Pan electrics????????

Now have generator apart, could somebody tell me how i know if it's cream crackered? Should i bite the bullet and buy a new one (how much?) or get a repair kit. The core (as far as i can tell) looks worn unevenly and smell a bit wierd, but that could be normal? HELP!
