which starter motor bits

sorry for all the questions. i seem to be dominating the board lately. i need to investigate a starter motor for my bike. but will probably end up buying individual bits secondhand and don't really know what i need. hitachi, prestolite, housings, bearings, cogs?

engine is stamped as a 1978, but don't know if it's early or late and if that matters? how can tell which starter i need.

i should get a manual really at least i can figure stuff out from the pictures, maybe?

thanks.

Don't you have a Parts Manual? ;)

I think, but I'm not sure that Prestolite and Hitache Motors are interchangable as complete units with the "Starter shaft housing".

Personally, I'd get hold of a Motor first then search for the other bits and bobs.

It looks from the Parts book that The Hitache unit was only fitted to FX - FXS Models, whilst the Prestolite was fitted to FL & FLH models.

It should be a breeze to figure out which you need from the Engine number. (If you need further help deciphering the Engine number code, just drop me a PM with your e-mail address).

Obviously this assumes that no-one has swapped the Tranny / Primary Drive. from another model.

Re: which starter motor bits

i have an invaluable parts manual now thanks to some kind gentleman or other ;). and thanks to that very same manual i now know i require a prestolite system. i'm thinking of just ordering the starter conversion kit from jp cycles. it includes everything i'd need. don't really want to spend an undefined length of time searching/acquiring starter bits.

laters, j.
