Have chuckled at the dry wit there. But the real tragedy is that the dealership would not know what Kim's troublesome steed is. Apologies to Phil, but over here, that's the truth |

Magger, at this present moment i'd have to agree with you, 'live to ride, ride to live' chrome goodies as well. Being the proud owner of three harley's who combined age add up to nearly as old as you, and none of them work. 73 shovel head woes, help! Anyhow, i hoping some bright spark can answer me this. About 18 months ago my reg/rect packed up, after near 30 years of good service, it was the origional, and i did about 10,000 trouble free miles with it. So i replaced it with an equivilant, made by CC, it lasted for about six months, but pretty much did the job, i was never convinced it gave me as much as the origional. Anyhow, i then replaced that one, with a different CC one, this one not chromed, but it never worked. OK i thought, it's not the reg/rect, it's the alternator. Yesterday i did all the tests on the alternator, following medocally 'kiwidaves' techtips (thanks dave really usefull) I came to the conclusion that the alternator was working, maybe not 100%, pin 1 (bottom pin) gave me 36AC at 2000 rpm, a bit low. pin 2, gave 72AC, pin 3 neglagable 02AC, pin four 83, so in total maybe 20% down. I did the ohms test, and got zero ohms on all pins. Now, i'm puzzled why i was getting no charge across the battery terminals, all earth good, not leakage, just no charge. battery good, 12.75DC. Anyhow, i thought it just has to be the reg/rec, as i'm getting nothing. so off i pop and buy my 3rd reg/rect in 18 months, not cheap. fitted it - nothing, zilch, still no charge, now i'm really perplexed. So i was rolling the reg/rects in my hand when i notice, that theres one dead pin (no metal sleave) in the first reg/rect, it's the bottom pin thats dead, but on the latter reg/rects, both of them identical it the TOP pin thats the dead one??????? complicating things further, it's the 3rd pin on the Stator (pins that stick out of the crankcase) thats giving me no reading. So whats going on??? why would they be different, my logic says the first replacement was working 50%, but the last two reg/rects were not working at all because i if you take out the top pin no 4, the one that gives 83AC, that leaves, and the 3 pin on the stator is the dead one, and no 1 pin on the stator is only putting out 35AC, that only leave no 2 pin fully functioning. does this make any sense, because i'm going fu*king mad. ...... arrrrggggg I'm going to by a goldwing. kim

30 years on one regulator? Say it ain't so Kim!!!!! Wow..... I got confused by your post and just scanned the V-Twin catalogue and found out why....pre-76s have four pins. New territory for me. It is critical to remember that a grounded stator can still give out the right kind of VOLTAGE......but it's still dead. The resistance tests are the key. But I confess my ignorance in not knowing which pins you should hook on the pin-to-pin test when there are four of them. I am seeking advice elsewhere. Check your PMs. |
