A race against time

Trying to get my panhead ready for the 500 mile round trip to BNM farm party. Several problems, but the most pressing is the main drive oil seal needs replacing (lots of oil getting into primary cover, and i'm running an enclosed belt) got oil seal out (thanks to Andy tool hire man and his wonderful seal extractor) I've bought a James seal kit JGI-35230-39-K, the seal kit consists of 'washer transmittion cork' jci-35231-36, oil seal, main drive gear jci-35230-39-DL, i know what to do with both of these, but i've also got oil seal maindrive gear end jci-12013-A, and inner primary cover double lip, jci-12018, my question is what do i do with these seals???

More questions to come. Yes i'm back, and i'm covered in oil.

Re: A race against time

max respect Kim

if you have those numbers nearly right (maybe a G instead of the C? ?), you don't need those.

See here, compare with the pix:

5-speed part. no-brainer

http://www.jamesgaskets.com/parts/JGI-12018.htm
this one I use myself on my four-speed, it sits behind (tranny side) the support bearing on the inner primary, but as website states, 1970-up. Good for your Shovels, not your Pan.

Good luck.

Re: A race against time

Leaking from the Main Drive Gear is the bane of older Four Speeds. However if the trans has a fair few miles on it, changing the seals is only a temporary Band Aid.
The problem is usually that the Main Drive Gear Bushing (between the MDG & the Main Shaft) is worn to the point that it allows the MDG to `wobble` on the shaft, causing the seals to wear out quick time. This makes for frustration & is expensive & time consuming.
At some time the bushing will have to be replaced.

Re: A race against time

Kiwidave, Phild, thank you for your replies, you are of course both correct. Phild, i think you've hit the nail on the head, this is just a bandaid until the winter months, then i fear a transmission rebuild. The good news is i've never stripped a gearbox, i guess it's about time i learnt.

I'm not too bothered about a little pool of oil marking every spot i park, the problem is it's getting into the clutch plates, and snatches, and pulls, then slips, and feels like a bucking stallion on heat whilst stood at the traffic lights.

To the harley spirit "oh please let me get to BNM's" hey-a-a-hey-a-a-hey-a-a-hey.

Re: A race against time

well i put in a new main shaft oil seal, tried all day to start the dam thing, kicked it over about twenty thousand times, swore, cried, begged, prayed, and eventually got it started...urika... no, the fu*king, c8nting, tw*ting, thing still spewed oil out. I think the gearbox has to come out... it loooks like it the shovelhead down to BNM.

Another race against time, got altinater problems, there is a little charge, but not enough... baffling. Ho hum, the joys of owning old motorcycles.

Re: A race against time

After the frustration of replacing the 'main drive gear oil seal, and having no luck stemming the oil leak... take deep breath.. the oil is comming out between the main drive gear and the main shaft. Now i would love to have a go at sorting this out in two days, what are my chances?

More importantly, what is causing this oil leak, is there a seal somewhere behind the thrust washer? and if so do i have to strip the transmission? if the latter is it best just to send it off and get it reconditioned, and if so any remomondations as to where i send it, and ball park cost. I figure if i'm going to strip the tranny then might as well get the whole thing sorted, ie different gearing... any recomondations.

Also i seem to have a oil leak, where the inner (tin) primary is fixed to the crank case, seems to be comming out of one or more of the bolt holes, tried nylon washers behind the bolts, tried instant gaskit, tried blue locktight, any words of wisdom on this.

Lots of questions, need lots of answers, sorry.

frustrated down but not out kim. (hope springs eternal)

Re: A race against time

You seem to have more oil than a Texan oil well!

Get it tapped and sold

have a great time at BNM - hope you manage to get there (and back) without causing an oil slick

Fingers (who knows bugger all about mechanics and has ultimate respect for those who do)

Re: A race against time

take a Shovel......pick one! don't rush anything.

Any kind of leak is endemic on a four-speed.

Ask Scriv to put you in touch with Dave Moulson in Lincoln - he a club member, is not far from you, and has had a Pan for decades. He's bound to have some good tips.

Also for a tranny rebuild, get a hold of Mark here:

http://www.southernspeedservices.com/home.html

He was Jeff's mechanic at Riverside Cycles in Sth London many years ago and he does speak Pan. I always found him very honest and knowledgable. He will put you right and treat you right.

Re: A race against time

I know its a bit late but have you considered Cometic HD Gaskets ? you can get a catalogue here:-

https://www.kitechperformance.com/do...cometic_hd.pdf

You can also get individual seals, gaskets and o'rings so you dont get stuffed for 5 or 10 if you only need 1..

https://www.kitechperformance.com/store.php?crn=291

might be handy for future reference..

Re: A race against time

Kim, isn't it about time that you behaved like a real Harley rider and took it to the dealers?

Trust me, handing over large amounts of money to these people is extremely therapeutic and gives you a warm sense of belonging to the real Harley family.

If you aren't sure how to go about this then I would be more than happy to help you through; I am an old hand at this sort of job and, without wanting to blow my own trumpet, I'm pretty bloody good at it! If I continue to develop my skills at this rate I'll soon be taking my bike to the dealers to wipe the flies off my screen.

;)

Nice to have you back
