shovel gearbox mounting plate

The two bolts on the front of this plate that bolt this plate to the frame appear to be 5/16" UNC coach bolts

Is this correct??

All the various parts and accessory catalogues seem to be somewhat vague on what should be here

If somebody could let me know eitehr the original part numbers or zodiac / cci part numbers it would be appreciated.

The two bolts I removed were somewhat munted and not suitable for anything other than the bin.

Re: shovel gearbox mounting plate

Kiwi ,

the two bolts in question are indeed coach bolts but I will have to have a look at my parts part book to give you the OEM number when I get back from the office. I'm sure someone else will be able to help in the meantime.

I've actaully got a couple of spares unfortunately they are with me over here in LA! so I can't get them to you too easily!

Re: shovel gearbox mounting plate

The factory parts books list the following.
The coachbolt is 47730-77, used on all late '77 onwards shovels and continued on the Softtail for a while also. Just wait a mo' while I put on my anorak,..ok the nut for that is up to early '77 7800W (3/8-24 x 5/16 x 9/16) and late '77 onwards 7643W "jamnut" (3/8-16 x 7/32 x 9/16) BUT the FX models book also has 7783 (3/8-16 x 5/16 x 9/16) for late '82-84. I 'spose jamnut means locknut in real money.

Re: shovel gearbox mounting plate

Pulled a gearbox out of a 82 shovel recently, had the same bolts. The difference here was the previous owner (we called him something else) had fitted substitutes same size with whitworth thread form ( passable alternative in an emergency) but aquired from the local ironmongers. Looked the same as the OEM items but made from soft crap recycled steel/iron. DONT BE TEMPTED the bolts stretch and the gearbox is hanging off the chaincase, not good.
