Re: Advice Needed: What can I do with an XR750?

Hi there! Just caught up with this thread.

Firstly, I own an XR750 too & took it to the anniversary rally - have had it for 18 yrs so I do know a bit about them...

I also know a bit about your bike - it used to belong to a guy called Mark George, he had it in his office for many years. he improted it from the US in the early 90s as I recall. I saw it offered for sale a couple of years ago, but not by him so he must've sold it on. I guess that's when you bought it.

It is a pukka national rider bike - it was ridden by Scott Pearson. Many XRs out there have not been ridden by the top US national guys and have just competed at regional level - yours has. So you shouldn't butcher it into a street tracker, you need to be sympathetic with it.

When Mark had it it was straight off the track and from the photo it still looks the same.

Don't waste your time with Harley dealers. Link yourself in with the racers. A guy in the UK who races one in the UK dirt series is Steve Hilary from Red Max Speed Shop near Chichester - decent feller too. I suggest you have him look over it for you and maybe ship the motor to the US for a proper going through. Don't put fuel in that tank - modern additives in it will melt the fibreglass resin - just keep it for show and get an alloy one if you're planning on running it.

Bye for now & good luck!
A

Re: Advice Needed: What can I do with an XR750?

There was a new one for sale in the mid-70s at a UK dealer, which I seriously considered buying. All it needed for the road was a front wheel with a racing drum brake and brake lever plus mudguard. All the necessary brackets were on the forks. Simples!

What's your problem?!

OP has only posted once, so we are probably whistling into the wind with this!

Put some clip ons on it together with race tyres oh, and a front brake then come and join us in the vintage club where you can race it. It's more fun tearing round Mallory than having it decorate your living room.

Cheers, David

If the history McQmoto indicates it has is true, you're quite right! Just stirs lustful memories of long ago....

I know I've gassed on about this, but I really am blown away by your answers and help. Even KiwiDave who started out tetchy ;)

I was beginning to really lose faith with this project, but unfailingly, everyone I've spoken to within the HD community has been positive, upbeat and really encouraging. Just thanks, really.
Phil beat me to it I was going to ask for a pic or two. Youre one lucky ferker to have the worry of what youre going to do with it. Just wish I had the same dilemma. Just dont keep it hidden away from us
