S&S on a Shovel

Aaarrgh, I'm tearin' me hair out.

I'm struggling to get the S&S carb set up on my Shovel, I've arsed about with jets, but still can't get it right.

Either it wont start or it's running rich can't find a happy medium.

Also get "Gooey" fuel dripping out of the air filter.

Anyone know an expert on this near Birmingham?

Re: S&S on a Shovel

Alright Chiefy, my mate has a shovel with an S&S carb.

He uses Thunder Road in Sparkhill. Might be worth a call.

Re: S&S on a Shovel

Is it a S and S E or B? Twin chocke? Single? I have one on my 1200 shovel, have my jet details in my shed will dig them out tomorrow for you, is yours 1200, 1340?

Chiefy

I usually rely on this http://www.sscycle.com/modules/instr...ds/51-1012.pdf it has a bunch of safety warnings (predictably) but last page has settings for all models.

Hi Chiefy
Which carb is it that you are having difficulty with? What pipes are you using on the bike?

Check that the air bleed off jet vents to atmosphere and that the vent tube is present; if it isn't then the main jet can activate too early.

Check the enrichener - only use S&S as others can also cause the carb to overgas.

Check the size of the air bleed of jet it should be 0.040" standard. Changing the size of this will also affect the main jet delivery.

With regard to the main jet try a 0.068" (0.070" standard). All the S&S jet charts are a guide for use with poor quality USA petrol (E85 - about 87 octane). We have better quality (95 or 98 octane) fuel which will have an affect on what jets to use.

Re: S&S on a Shovel

I've got a super E on my 1340 shovel and had some fun and games setting up the jets, but don't forget you have a lot of adjust on the air mix screw (up to 3 full turns) and that can have a big impact on things before the carb moves on to main jet running which occurs at about 2500 / 3000 rpm. At the point it switches jets, you can get a bit spluttering unless the engine is warm and / or you roll the throtle open rather than snapping it. From my own experience, I have felt that the super B works better on the shovels and could run quite a lean main jet when running with a performance cam.

As for the gooey fuel coming out the filter - is the oil line breathing thru there as well as that covers the filter element in shit.

For advise, you could also try Heidi at THS (the former Mrs John Davey) she knows a thing or two and more about shovels.
