Question Regestering a Classic Harley

I miss my old Panhead chop, so much so that i have decided to build another. I can't afford a donor bike and can't be a*sed to wait until i can; so i'm looking at building bit-by-bit - far more fun.
Can anyone give me details, or stear me in the right direction, on the do's and don't for this method so that I don't end up on a Q Plate.
I am looking at an original Harley Engine with legit numbers, but possibly an aftermarket frame (paucho/SPS). If the Harley engine is a no goer, then it may have to be S&S or other.
I have looked at the V355 on-line, but it doesn't really go into that sort of detail.

Snowflake,

I believe as long as it has at least 3 major components that are original harley davidson then it can be registered as one and go on an age related plate, you would have to have written proof of the age of the items.

So if you have a original motor, gearbox and say forks you could get away with it, but the more that is original the better i would say.

Rob, if i'm correct, and your looking for an earlier bike, then 'only' the engine was stamped with a number, so i would guess that will dictate your plate. I await the french man's response.

Are you trying to make me feel guilty? Sappho (thats the Pan's name) say's hello.

Sappho? What kind of name is that?!!

That's what I thought (pre '64...or something), the frame was certainly not numbered, and as you say if the engine fits in before then, it would stand to reason that would be the case.....Patrick?

Re: Regestering a Classic Harley

you may find a problem registering a chop as a classic bike

getting an age related plate is not an issue, the issue is getting somebody to sign the paper work off that it is an old bike

many people get around this buy buying an old bike and rebuilding it (headstock numbers and log book) as something completely different

Re: Regestering a Classic Harley

Hi all,

yes, Kiwi's right, the DVLA Age Related Scheme is for original bikes, as in "as it left the factory", not choppers...

I usually can accept one or two minor mods or non period parts, but a full chopper is stretching the purpose of the scheme...

After-market frames, if good copies, are OK in their eyes if not mine, but STD cases and such are a no-no from the start...

There are other DVLA schemes to register older things, rebuilt classic and such, still don't apply to choppers.

You can also rebuild anything as brand new assembled parts (with proof of provenance), you'll get a modern non-transferable plate, at least it's not a Q plate!!!

In one word, anything assembled from parts from various years can't be "age related" and ends up with a Q plate, unless you know somebody high up the DVLA...

Patrick,
Thanks for that M8, makes sense.
I'll look into the donor bike option a little later once I've saved up a little more - or until Che wants to sell me back my Pan....
